Timbaland's sample controversy court case concludes

It's been 2 years now since the release of Nelly Furtado's "Do It" and the overwhelming fanfare and controversy that followed. I can still remember when the story first broke, Timbaland had allegedly stolen a sample from Finnish C64/Amiga demoscener Janne "Tempest" Suni for Nelly Furtado's single "Do It." Actually the sample in question was by Glenn Rune Gallefoss but was a remix of the the original which was composed by Tempest. Those of us familiar with Timbo's work recognized the sample immediately from the ringtone "Block Party" created before "Do It" as a ringtone for Verizon. After the story first hit the media, what followed was a viral campaign about the allegations that literally spun out of control.

Blogs and music websites went into a frenzy about the controversy, forums were buzzing with opinions, thoughts, and views from people all over the world, and soon youtube videos comparing the 2 songs began popping up everywhere. There were some comparison videos with experienced producers/beatmakers/demoscneres explaining their thoughts on the 2 samples but there were also plenty of others videos where self addressed "experts" shared their opinions on what was and was not a sample for the mere sake of joining the hype of the story. The Chronicles also covered the controversy which was met with it's own set of comments but soon those comments, along with many others on the net, turned into hate filled, racist remarks that I found myself deleting daily.

Timbaland's myspace was flooded with bigoted messages and comments and The Chronicles' email was also hit for weeks with nasty emails. All this over a sample? Does the color of one's skin matter when it comes to sampling? I was determined to get the real story of the controversy, not what was being presented by random people on youtube. I attempted multiple times to get in contact with Tempest or at least those affiliated with him but never got a response. I was also hoping to hear something from Timbaland but also nothing. What really happened? Unfortunately it didn't look like I'd ever find out and as the weeks continued the story gradually faded and I like the rest of you let it fade too.....but never forgot.

Fast forward to the present day and The Chronicles has learned that after a very long wait the court case regarding the use of the sample in "Do It" has just concluded in a Finnish courtroom. Witnesses for both sides gave their testimonies and as soon as January 24th the public will be made aware of the decision in this case. No details on the specifics of the case have been given but The Chronicles was able to talk with Chris Abbott an expert witness for the plaintiff who released the following statement:

"Although I'm confident in my own testimony (and the other testimony in this
case against Mr. Mosley), there's just no way of knowing which witnesses the
Finnish Court believed, which they won't, or what evidence will prove more
compelling to them. Therefore I'm waiting along with everyone for the
judgement (which should be made public on January 24th), to see how it went.
Of course, that won't even be the end of the story: just the beginning...
but another step in this unfortunately long saga *sigh*"

For all of you who are interested in the outcome of this long standing case stayed tuned to The Chronicles with the possibility of more details on the case. My gratitude and appreciation goes out to Mr. Abbott for taking the time out of his busy schedule to talk to us.

Stay tuned.

Partial Credits for Chris Cornell's Scream

Even though we have another 5 weeks or so before Chris Cornell and Timbaland's long awaited project Scream comes out, The Chronicles can give you almost all, just one short, of the credits for the album. Here they are:

2. Time (produced by Timbaland, written by The Clutch and Jim Beanz)

13. Watch Out (produced by Timbaland and J Roc, written by Chris Cornell and Jim Beanz)
14. 2 Drink Minimum (produced by Timbaland, written by Chris Cornell but we know from what Chris Cornell said that J Roc was also a part of this track though uncredited.

Also it looks like we have 2 unreleased, possibly bonus tracks(?) off the album as well:

- "Love Come Down" produced by Timbaland, written by Chris Cornell and The Clutch

and

- "Stop Me" produced by Timbaland and J Roc written by James Fauntleroy

That is unless "Get Up" has been retitled "Love Come Down." Whatever the case what an amazing all star cast on Cornell's album. I hope it's as an amazing project in it's entirety as both Cornell and Timbaland have said it is.

Watch out Feburary 9th!!

Timbaland sued by florist

A Florida florist is allegedly suing Timbaland over $11,450 in unpaid Christmas decortations. The White Tulip Florist in Miami Beach filed legal papers required to put a lien on Timbo's Miami mansion, claiming he bought $25,850 worth of trees, flowers and lights but still owes $11,450.

IF this story is true Timbaland isn't messing around when it comes to Christmas decorations. Damn!

Cory Bold talks on Keri Hilson's "Alienated"

Cory Bold released the following via his myspace yesterday:

Hi guys! CORY BOLD here! Just wanted to address the recent leak of "KERI HILSON - ALIENATED" That I did the production for. I am a little disappointed, mainly due to the fact that the actual track for that one I did about 3 years back. It was also to suppose to be released A LOT sooner! Just be aware the the production on that track is NOT a very good example of where I am NOW as a music producer. I feel like I have grown in musical skill tremendously since then. Not to mention, the leak is an OLD mix of the song. That is all! Thank you guys, and 2009 is THE YEAR I will make my attack on the music industry..... so I hope you all are ready!!

-CORY

Fair response especially considering Bold made the announcement about "Alienated" all the way back in early Feburary of 2008, nearly a year ago. To all my producers/beatmakers where were you musically a year ago?

So how did Keri and Cory's collabo come about? Turns out head hancho of Interscope-Geffen-A&M Records, Jimmy Iovine heard a sample of Bold's work and insisted that Keri write to the track according to reports. Described by Bold as a track with "futuristic chime melodies backed with these deep emotional string pads. It takes you into outer space with its captivating beat and futuristic vibe" it shows that a lot can happen in a year, especially for a talented and rising producer.

Plus it's Jimmy Iovine, what are you going to say no!?

Jose Cenquentez "FYA" produced by Danja

Ginuwine is a busy man these days, with a new album coming April 9 and a lead single coming sometime next month. He's also been on the search for new artists and he's definitely struck gold with his new signee, Jose Cenquentez. The name should sound familiar as he was featured on the Ginuwine track "Chedda" off The Senior back in 2003.

And what do you do with new talent? You give them top notch producers to work with and that's exactly what happened with the SICK as hell Cenquentez/Danja collab called "FYA", check it:

share your files at box.net

It's tracks like these where I'm reminded the influence of Timbaland on Danja yet Danja does what he does best adding those spooky synth, piano, and organ melodies/sounds throughout the song. Track is grimey! I know understand what Danja brought to N.O.R.E's "Get Down." Hands down, "FYA" is one of my favorite Danja tracks to date. Make sure to keep an eye on Jose Cenquentez.

Big props to Buddha for the hook up.

Keri Hilson "Alienated"

Check out Keri Hilson's "Alienated" produced by Cory Bold off Keri's highly anticipated album, In A Perfect World dropping....err sometime soon?

Rumor Alert: Shock Value II release date and tracklist

The following is a fake article that is currently making the rounds on the internet. There's no mention of it on MTV or any major media outlet and with a story as big as this, you'd think it would be everywhere. As soon as The Chronicles knows the real story on Shock Value II, you all will be the first to know!

Timbaland has revealed that his new album, the follow-up to 2007’s ‘Shock Value’, will be hitting stores on February 14th. The album features 20 brand-new tracks including the new single ‘Meltdown’ that features guest vocals from Gwen Stefani and Justin Timberlake and will be impacting on radio from January 5th.

MTV.com was given an exclusive first listen of 5 of the album’s tracks, including the new single, and revealed it’s some of the producers ‘best work’.

‘Meltdown’ – the first single from the album, featuring guest vocals from Gwen Stefani and old-time collaborator Justin Timberlake is a typical Timbaland club-stomper, with thumping chorus in which Justin and Gwen invite one another to ‘melt down; all the way’.

‘That’s The Way’ – featuring Usher and Keri Hilson on vocals, this throwback track samples the classic KC and the Sunshine band track, ‘That’s The Way I Like It’ but with a sultry new twist reminiscent of Usher’s own ‘Love In This Club’ single.

‘Dumb’ – the rockiest of the tracks, featuring the group of the moment, the Jonas Brothers. Beginning as seemingly regular teenage, High School Musical-esque song, it soon breaks out into a crazy whirl-of-a-track that is about an unnecessary break-up.

‘Accross The Sky’ – a leftover track from Madonna’s ‘Hard Candy’ album, which Timbaland produced many tracks for. However, this version has been completely reworked from the original leaked clip that has appeared online. Now a much darker track similar to the ‘Hard Candy’ track, Voices. With guest vocals from Justin Timberlake (again) and a brief appearance from the lady herself, Madonna, this song is longest of the tracks, clocking in at over 7 minutes!

‘Underground’ – this one is definitely our favourite. Featuring a heavy sample of the classic dance track ‘Sandstorm’ by Darude, this is unlike anything Timbaland has done before. With incredible quest vocals from Rihanna, this song is one to watch out for. It has to be a single!

Othe guests on the album include T-Pain, Akon, Linkin Park, Jordin Sparks, T.I. and Coolio.

The full tracklisting is below. Be sure to check out the video for ‘Meltdown’ when it premieres on MTV.com in January!

1. Meltdown (featuring Gwen Stefani and Justin Timberlake)
2. That’s The Way (featuring Keri Hilson and Usher)
3. ‘Til I Say So (featuring Akon)
4. Act Right (featuring T-Pain and Tim Dog)
5. Dumb (featuring Jonas Brothers)
6. Still Standing (featuring Linkin Park)
7. Accross The Sky (featuring Justin Timberlake and Madonna)
8. Rain (featuring Jordin Sparks)
9. Don’t Hurt ‘Em (featuring T.I.)
10. Underground (featuring Rihanna)
11. Why U Still Calling? (Miscommunication Part II) (featuring Keri Hilson and Sebastian)
12. Click Clack (featuring Dr. Dre and Missy Elliott)
13. Talk (featuring T-Pain and Missy Elliott)

Billy Blue to work with TImbaland

Poe Boy Music Group, who's already given us the likes of Jacki-O, Rick Ross, and Flo Rida, introduces its newest member, Florida's own Billy Blue. Poe CEO, Big Chuck, recognized the endless potential of this rising MC and quickly singed him. After countless hours in the the studio and an already released street album Rated Hood, Blue is ready to drop his debut album, Ball Like A Dog, sometime in 2009 with confirmed production by Akon and Timbaland.

It's been a long time since we've heard a good rap/hip hop beat from Timbland so le'ts hope the two come out with some heat!

Aaliyah Biopic in 2009?

I should probably file this under Word Is since it hasn't been 100% confirmed but it seems the long overdue Aaliyah biopic will be coming mid 2009. The movie will chronicle the life of Aaliyah throughout her life until her untimely death in 2001.

And just who will be playing Aaliyah?

R&B singer Keisha Chante that's who. Chante has signed on to the movie with shooting starting in August. Chante has worked with both The Clutch and Danja on her album 2U released in 2006.

Let's hope a soundtrack with unreleased Aaliyah/Timbaland tracks also comes out with the movie. Stay tuned for more details!

Props to Hammer on the news.

Interscope wins airplay for 2008 with help from Timbaland

The label was up 1% in its chart share from last year from 126% to 13.6%.

Who Flipped It Better: Timbaland Vs. Cat Power

It seems like everytime I do one of these posts, it always turns out to be my favorite to date. This episode of Who Flipped It Better is no different since it pits Timbaland against Cat Power. Seems like an unlikely match but yet they both have used the same, though common, sample.

Let's go back to the year 2002 when Missy Elliott released her critically acclaimed and most cohesive record to date Under Construction. From start the finish the album was just the right length, filled with the perfect songs that showed the skills of both Missy and Timbo and introduced the throwback 80s flow that Missy still uses today. The album was also very sample heavy. Take for example, track #6 Missy's "Funky Fresh Dressed." Dope track, sick flow, and she added a couple ill verses from Ms. Jade with the Timbo beat change which we will be looking at today:

share your files at box.net

Now let's look 4 years before Under Construction in 1998 when an artist named Cat Power was recording her incredible 4th album Moon Pix across the world, in Melbourne, Australia. With the lunar theme in mind, Cat Power and her teams wrote 1/2 the album in just one night. One track that caught my attention when I heard it was the haunting "American Flag"

share your files at box.net

So you should know the sample, it's an easy one, but the question is Who Flipped It Better?

Sure I could have compared the Tim track to many tracks out there who've used this sample but I thought I'd mix it up and go for two polar opposite artists. If you've been sleeping on Cat Power up to this point definitely check her out, she's amazing!!

Britney Spears "Rock Boy" produced by Danja

In addition to the album and the deluxe version of Britney Spears' Circus, there's almost an entire album worth of bonus tracks that have been popping up on the various different releases of the album. Case in point, the German bonus track off Circus titled "Rock Boy" turns out to be a Danja track. Here take a listen:

share your files at box.net

The track was written by Tina Parol who confirmed the Danja production via her myspace blog:

So I had the amazing opportunity of working with the very talented Danja and Ms. Britney Spears on her new album "Circus"! My song, titled "Rock Boy" is a b-side on the album...so check it out on Itunes Europe or on Youtube!

:-)

~Tina

So are we thinking Danja used a rock sample or live instruments? Either way, track is pretty dope and is a perfect example of Danja's versatility.

Props to Виктор!

Timstrumental of the week

We get our first Chris Cornell/Timbo Timstrumental and it just happens to be my favorite track the 2 have yet to release. Here is Chris Cornell's:

"Part Of Me"

I have to admit this is one of those cases where the vocals make the song rather than the beat. The beat comes off repetitive and boring after awhile none the less add enjoy another Timstrumental for your collection.

T.I. featuring Justin Timberlake "If I"

Along with the new Busta/Danja track, a lot of you have brought to our attention the new T.I. banger featuring Justin Timberlake named "If I." Numerous blogs and websites have reported this track is produced by Timbaland. Even Rolling Stone is reporting the track as Timbo. Take a listen:

share your files at box.net

BUT this is The Chronicles and sure we might not be Rolling Stone or MTV, but we still give you that exclusive news when we can.

"If I" is actually produced by none other than....*drum roll*....Rob Knox and Justin Timberlake of the Y's. Yep that's right the same duo responsible for T.I.'s other smash "Dead and Gone". Knox has been mentioned a few times here on The Chronicles and his production skills can not be denied. Dude is dope!

Who are the Y's you ask? That would be Rob Knox, Justin Timberlake, and James Fauntleroy. An insane group of talent who you will be hearing a lot more from in the coming year. Don't sleep!

T-Pain Demo for Missy Elliott

Despite the slow news in the Missy Elliott world, head over to our friends at Missy Watch and listen to the demo T-Pain and an unnamed MC did for Missy. Track is HOT! Sadly though it's not produced by Timbo but it's definitely the best would be Missy track I've heard in a long time.

Let's hope it makes the final cut for Block Party!

Kevin Cossom Pre-Album

Danja's new artist, Kevin Cossom, has dropped his highly anticipated "album" Pre-Album which you can download here for free. Here's the tracklisting again just in case you forgot it:

1. Intro
2. "Late Night" (Produced by Frank E)
3. "My Ex" feat. Rick Ross (Produced by Danja)
4. Interview
5. "You Know What You Doin" (Produced by Danja)
6. "Hang That Over My Head" (Produced by Danja)

The unheard Danja track is "My Ex", what do you think?

Jamie Foxx Intuition

Despite the different stories surrounding Jamie Foxx's 2 Timbaland/Jim Beanz tracks, as well as the different names ("Nothin' From Ya'", "Bitch I"), the reincarnated "Don't Need It" did make the album. Turns out the track was also penned by James Fauntleroy.

So does that mean "Street Walker" will be on Shock Value II?? Stay tuned!

Music Video: Chris Cornell "Scream"

5 Singles, 3 videos and we still have 2 months to go until the album release. Hmm...

Billy Corgan disses Timbaland?

Billy Corgan, lead singer for the Smashing Pumpkins, has thrown in his 2 cents on the current troubles in music, blaming iTunes for the demise of the album format. "There is no point. People don't even listen to it all. They put it on their iPod, they drag over the two singles and skip over the rest" Corgan said. In fact Corgan has no plans on releasing any more albums, period. "The listening patterns have changed, so why are we killing ourselves to do albums, to create balance and do the arty track to set up the single? It's done."

Ok so he doesn't like iTunes and he doesn't want to release anymore albums, fair enough but then he takes it a step further making an out of the blue comment about working with Timbaland: "We will crack the egg like we did in ‘92, without doing something embarrassing like working with Timbaland."

Does Mr. Corgan have a valid point, what do you think?

Props to Shaun on the find

Attitude talks his music history

If you didn't know about 'Tude before now you do!

Lonely Planet "Jizz In My Pants"...... a Timbaland beat?

If you all havent't seen the HILARIOUS "Jizz In My Pants" video by Saturday Night Live's Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, aka Lonely Island, take a look:

Music Video: "Jizz In My Pants"

"I just ate a grape and I... jizzed in my pants!" HA!!

Now that you've seen the video, take a closer listen to the track. Sounds like a straight up Timbaland beat doesn't it? If not Timbo than maybe Justin Timberlake since he makes a cameo in the video and sings background for the song. So who produced it?

Let's let Andy Samberg himself clear it up in a recent interview he did with MTV:

"When I first heard that beat, it sounded like a Timbaland beat. My first reference was a Missy Elliott club jam, and then we threw some generic Euro Brit dudes on top, because, to be honest, we don't have the chops to crush a Timbaland beat."

Does this clear it up? Hmmm...

Be on the look out for Lonely Island's album Incredibad February 10 with collabos by T-Pain, Norah Jones, Jack Black, E-40, the Strokes' singer Julian Casablancas, and Justin Timberlake.

KC "Hang That Over My Head" produced by Danja

Here is a first listen to to KC's newest track, unmastered, called "Hang That Over My Head" produced by Danja:

1. Intro
2. "Late Night" (Produced by Frank E)
3. "My Ex" feat. Rick Ross (Produced by Danja)
4. Interview
5. "You Know What You Doin" (Produced by Danja)
6. "Hang That Over My Head" (Produced by Danja)
7. Interview8. "Compatible" (Produced by The Runners)

Love this new track and definitely looking forward to the album!

Timbaland makes top 100 songs of 2008

Rolling Stone has given their choices for the top 100 songs of 2008 and a couple Timbaland assisted tracks made the list.

26. "No Sex For Ben" -The Rapture
This thrilling dance-rock anthem debuted on a virtual radio in Grand Theft Auto IV, then dominated every rave-up on the real-life airwaves. Secret weapon? Cowbell.

51. "Rule Breaker" -Ashlee Simpson
Mrs. Wentz's rebellion jam is all bratty 'tude, stabby guitar and 2008's most entertaining taunt: "You don't want no beef!"

Others to check for
28. "Let It Rock" Kevin Redolf
69. "Ching-A-Ling" Missy Elliott

Brandy talks Timbaland

Rap Up recently caught up with Brandy to talk about the creation of her album Human and working with Darkchild and Timbo. You'll be interested in what she has to say:

On why Timbaland didn't make the album
"One of the reasons why is because it’s hard to get Timbaland’s voice on records, and we really wanted his voice to be on the records. It’s not that they’re not good, it’s just that we couldn’t work it out where he could actually be on the album."

On working with Timbo in the future
"I think I’m gonna work with Timbaland again heavy for my next album. He’s one of the most talented producers, I think, to ever exist. I would love to do an album with him and Rodney together, like they actually executive produce it together. That would be a dream of mine."

And the current situation between Darkchild and Tim
"Timbaland is one of Rodney’s favorite producers and Rodney is one of Timbaland’s favorite producers."

What strikes me is how hard it is to get just Timbaland's voice on a track. Why?

Check for more Brandy in the upcoming winter 08/09 issue of Rap Up

Melrose "Ever" Vs. Atozzio Towns "Hurts So Good"

As the demand for a Danja beat increases so do the alternate versions of the same beat. We've shown you a few already and now we have yet another. You all remember the Danja produced "Ever" by the girl trio Melrose right?

Melrose "Ever"

share your files at box.net

Definitely a hot track, especially the vocals. Well The Chronicles has stumbled on another track with the same Danja beat but with an entirely different name and singer. Atozzio Towns (whose written for Ray J, Jesse McCartney, New Kids On The Block, and wrote Mario's banger Kryptonite") decided he too liked the beat or perhaps laid down the vocals as a reference for another artist. Whatever the case here is his take on Danja's banger titled "Hurts So Good":

Jamie Foxx "Street Walker"

Freestyle Steve breaks us off with another exclusive Jaime Foxx track called "Street Walker" via his myspace go check it out.

The track is produced by Timbaland and J Roc with vocals by Jim Beanz.

So I take it that neither of these tracks will be on Foxx's new album but does that mean there are others that will be on the project? Let's hope so!

Britney Spears in the studio

If you haven't seen MTV's Documentary on Britney Spears called "For The Record" go check it out. Fan or not it's a very interesting story of what fame can do to someone. We all conduct everyday tasks without even blinking an eye but imagine trying to simply take a walk down the street hounded by hundreds of photographers. No thanks but hey that's the price of fame I guess.

Stepping off my soapbox, there is a particular segment of interest in the show where MTV catches Britney working with Jim Beanz on "Womanizer" and Britney working with an excited J Que of The Clutch on the bonus track "Trouble." Check it out about 6 minutes in:

Be on the lookout for more Britney in the studio hopefully here soon from The Chronicles.

Timbaland's wedding photos

Some beautiful pictures have recently been posted from Timbaland's wedding along with some commentary from staff writer Grace Ormonde:

Two weeks before their Aruba destination wedding, Monique Idlett and Tim Mosley were legally married on Virginia Beach—in sweatpants. "That would have been enough for me," Monique avows. That is, until she experienced the amazing island wedding Tim arranged.

"He wanted me to feel like a princess," Monique says of Tim's decision to plan the five-day affair with a committee's help, but minimal input from his bride. It wasn't the first time the music producer and recording artist, better known as Timbaland, had surprised his long-time girlfriend.

They met in 2001 while visiting Jamaica for work, and Monique, now president of Mosley Music Group, realized immediately that Tim "was going to be in my life forever. At our wedding," she says, Tim told guests that "when he saw me, he knew I was going to be his wife." Their long-distance friendship and on-and-off relationship turned serious when "we both put each other first," Monique says. "It was a decision that we both finally made."

Still, she was caught off-guard when "he proposed at our baby shower" in November of 2007. "I cried so heavily that my family reminded me that I was in front of people," says Monique, who cherishes a transcript of Tim's "beautiful proposal."

About 400 guests arrived Thursday and a welcome party was held Friday at the Renaissance Aruba Resort and Casino, where everyone but the couple stayed. On Saturday, "we had a rehearsal breakfast," then took over a bowling alley, says Monique, who treasured this break from their workaholic lifestyles. "It was nice not to be worried about anything except what was happening," she says.

Boats ferried guests to the resort's private Renaissance Island for Sunday's 6 p.m. Christian service. As Pastor Vernell Dreuitt, who also officiated their Virginia ceremony, "was explaining marriage and what it means, I looked at my husband, and he looked at me: It was a very profound moment," remembers Monique, who remained composed, even as they exchanged deeply personal promises. "I was practicing not to cry. I didn't want to have an episode like at my baby shower," she says.

The reception featured a "beautiful display of food," and the fireworks were "unlike any I had seen before," Monique says. After dinner, "Tim got on the stage. He performed, and I danced, then we danced together." The party continued for two hours after the newlyweds departed at 1 a.m.

Guests reunited for dinner Monday before Tuesday's farewells. "We were so happy that everyone was able to have a good time. We're both family people," Monique says. Daughter, Reign, and sons Demetrius, who escorted Monique, and Frankie, the ring bearer, accompanied them on a post-wedding, south of France vacation.

Although it isn't always easy, "we pretty much travel together always," Monique says. And while she's grateful that Tim "truly gave me a fairytale wedding," she's quick to emphasize: "What's important to us is what we do for the rest of our life—to make sure that we love each other the right way." Tim is "a genuine, real person," she says. "You get what you see and I love that about him. And I love how much he loves me."

Congratulations once again to the very happy couple!!

Jamie Foxx "Bitch I"

Freestyle Steve has laced us yet again with another Timbaland exclusive. The track comes from Jamie Foxx titled "Bitch I." It sounds familiar doesn't it? Yes of course it does; it's the same track that leaked a few weeks back titled "Nothin' From Ya." Sadly the track leaked literally a week after we reported that the two were working together. Really, how the hell does that happen? Regardless the track has been bangin' since I first heard it!

Anyhow, we all assumed the track was for Jamie Foxx's forthcoming Intuition album but look very carefully. Freestyle has the track not only labeled with a different name but it looks to be yet another track from Timbo's upcoming Shock Value II. So the question is will this track along with other leaked tracks, [T-Pain & Missy's "Talk That", Brandy's "Drum Life"] really make the final cut or are these just teaser tracks until the real project is released? Time will tell.

You should notice something else about the version Freestyle posted but I'll let you all figure that out.

Now of course why doesn't it surprise me that when Timbo goes in to create a hot record he calls on the illest vocal producer/writer in the game, my dude Jim Beanz. Hear the "give it to me" throughout the track. Remember it, you've heard it before and you'll hear it again.

Shock Value II is on it's way!

In A Perfect World... tracklisting

Though HMV has not given Keri Hilson's album an official release date they have compiled a tracklisting for the project:

1. Energy
2. Mic Check-Feat. Akon
3. Turnin' Me On-Feat. Lil Wayne
4. Return The Favour-Feat. Timbaland
5. Get It Girl
6. Where Did He Go
7. Do It To Me Radio
8. Slow Dance
9. Alienated
10. Shake It Like A Dog-Feat. R Kelly
11. Love Ya
12. Intuition
13. Hurts Me
14. How Does It Feel?
15. Tell Him The Truth

There is no confirmation on the tracklisting but with all the interviews and articles Keri has done as of late this could very well be the real deal. Then again with all the continual push backs, the album could still be in the process of being finalized. Stay tuned!

Hall and Oates sue over "Maneater"

80s favorites Daryl Hall and John Oates are suing Warner Music Group's music publishing division Warner/Chappell Music home of Hall & Oates, Timothy "Timbaland" Mosley and Nate "DanjaHandz" Hills. The legendary duo filed in Manhattan's Supreme Court for failure to protect their 80s classic "Maneater."

Warner Chappell Music are accused of breaching their contract by refusing to sue for copyright infringement. "[Warner/Chappell] failed and refused to take action based upon a conflict of interest of its own making," the suit says. "[Warner-Chappell] publishes and/or administers the copyright interests of two of the infringers." Though the suit does not name specific names, Hall & Oates are suing for an unspecified amount in damages and a termination of their contract with the publishing company.

A company spokeswoman for Warner Chappell said the case was "completely without merit" and "we will defend ourselves vigorously."

So what do YOU think? Is there a case or not? Leave a comment and let us know.

Keri in Complex

Next month's issue of Complex will be graced by the presence that is Keri Hilson. Check out the video of the photoshoot:

And here's the interview with the mag:

Men say: I can never be completely honest with my woman about her appearance.

Keri Hilson says: That’s definitely true. I’m 5'9''. So, my height’s an issue. If I’m feeling sexy, I’ll put on some heels—if that makes me a little taller than you, so be it. You have to be secure enough to stand next to a stallion. [Laughs.] For a woman to feel her best, her man has to support her.

Men say: Unless we’re engaged, you don’t need to meet my parents.

Keri Hilson says: That’s definitely some B.S. You can be boyfriend and girlfriend for more than three or four years without being engaged. Your parents, to a girlfriend, are a reflection of who you are. I’ve never dated a guy and called him my boyfriend until he met my parents.

Men say: A woman’s never faked it with me. If she did, I’d know.

Keri Hilson says: Oh, lord! Men think they know if we’re faking it, but they have no idea. [Laughs.] I know girls who are really good at it, and the men have no clue. Sometimes you have to feed the male ego.

Men say: Moving in with your girlfriend automatically kills your sex life.

Keri Hilson says: That’s probably true, because you see a woman in so many different lights. They see us in our shower cap or granny panties—not that I’m saying I own any of them. [Laughs.] But why put the cart before the horse? If you want to live together and act married, then why not get married?

Props to Big T.R.U.T.H for the info!

New D.O.E Interview

For all you out there, from MCS to producers to regular folks, on your grind trying to make something of yourselves this interview is for you. D.O.E opens up about his struggle form the streets to the majors, how "The Way I Are" changed his game, and the real deal on working with Timbo. Check it out:

What’s your current label situation with Timbaland?

Timbaland is still at Interscope. The situation went south but two years later, him and Interscope worked it out. I’ve been on Interscope since they got me. They had to do the Nelly Furtado album and when he did his album, he told me he got me. I was like, ‘All right, cool.’ I was just going off of his word. That was another hard thing to do because you’re not supposed to put too much trust in any man but it was like, I put that trust in him. I was like, ‘All right, cool.’ He said he got me so I waited.

So when it came time to do his album he told me to come down there but at this time I’m super-fucked up. I had to rent a car and drive down there and when I got to the studio, I didn’t even have no money for a hotel so I slept in the car for three days. Every day after the studio I would go and sleep in the car while everybody else went to their hotels. They didn’t know. And then one day Timbaland caught me and I told him I was fucked up. He got me a hotel room and when we got to the studio he said he had the perfect song. It was “I ain’t got no money.” (laughs) Oh shit! That right there damn-sure was the perfect record for me. That’s how “The Way I Are” came about. That shit was perfect for me. That shit was a poor man’s anthem!

The rarest "We At It Again" version

I can still remember when Czar sent me my first alternate version of a Timbaland track many years ago. I had no desire at the time in even bothering with them but, in true stan form, the more I heard the more I wanted to collect all of them until finally I was bugging poor Czar daily for whichever alternates he had in his collection. For the most part most Timbaland songs have at least a radio edit which is slightly different (usually shorter) than the original. In some cases though a track has an alternate with either added sounds, maybe a deleted verse, or as is the case with the best alternates, an entirely different beat.

There are even those alternates that have a whole range of differences and such is the case with the track "We At It Again." Of the 6 versions known, the rarest and my personal favorite, comes from the actual movie "Romeo Must Die". Take a listen at around 1:08:

In case you didn't know, that's Static as the main voice in the track. Until now, I had no idea where this version had come from. Personally, I place it in my top 3 rarest Timbaland tracks ever known. Will the full ever surface? One day perhaps.

Props to Adam.

One Republic prep 2nd album

One Republic have started on their sophomore album after the their highly successful debut Dreaming Out Loud according to Billboard. What was supposed to be a reissue instead turned into a full on new project. According to guitarist Zach Filkins, "Initially we were going to add a new song to a deluxe album, but then instead of doing that we decided to maybe just work on the second album. We're extremely excited to get going with something new because we've been playing a lot of these songs for five years now. So we're definitely ready and inspired for the new album, which is part of the reason why we got off the road. We were supposed to tour into next year."

Seems as though the band got inspire on the international leg of their tour. "In listening to what was coming out, we decided maybe we should stop and take advantage of this and write the second album," Filkins says. "The new stuff is a real blend of rock mixed with pop and some of the songs are clearly like top 40 and other stuff is going to be a little more obscure." 2 tentative tracks for the new album will be "All the Right Moves," which is upbeat and pop based and the /keyboard-heavy "The Other Side."

Will Timbaland be on the new album? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Bobby Valentino "Pull It Off" produced by...

Here's another track that's been around for a few months (the snippet that is) labeled as a Timbaland beat but again there's been no way to confirm it. Take a listen to the full that just dropped:

You know this is The Chronicles though so we gotta go that extra mile for you. Is the track produced by Timbaland? Yes along with some help from the Royal Court just like the other Bobby Valentino/Royal Court/Timbaland tracks "Anonymous" and "Rearview (Ridin')."

and the writers you ask? Of course it has to be the one and only Clutch!

Check the hand clap sample. I'm pretty sure I know where it comes from. Do you?

Danja "Hurt Somebody"

Everyday I get emails with a new "Timbaland", "Danja", or "The Clutch" track and almost always they end of being some random track by some random artist that some random website labeled as a "Timbaland beat" in order for people to listen. I'll give you all a rule thumb that works almost everytime: If you've never heard of the artist before or more so if the artist is unsigned to a major more than likely it isn't a Timbaland or Danja beat. The economy might be down at the moment but that doesn't mean Timbo isn't still charging a $100,000 a track that both Kardinal Offishall and Joe Budden have confirmed in the past so how could an unsigned major artist afford that? The rule doesn't always apply (Mahtie's "Burnerz") but for the most part it does.

There are, however, those rare occasions that it truly IS a Timbo or Danja beat. Case in point: A few days ago a track came out labeled as a Danja beat, written by the Clutch, and sung by Motown Record recording artist LeMarvin who The Clutch have worked with before ("Not My Day", "New Body Style") yet there was no way to confirm it. Sure it sounds like Danja, that could be The Clutch's melodies, and maybe it is LeMarvin but there was no real info on just who it was.

Well after a little checking on our part The Chronicles found out that the track is indeed a Danja beat and a Clutch penned track. Here take a listen:

So is that LeMarvin on the vocals? Nope. Rather it's Clutch member...drum roll....Bale'wa Mohammad. The track must be a demo but who for we have yet to find out. Now if you remember from the interview with fellow Clutch member J. Que, he said Bale'wa has done more music than the entire Clutch combined and Que is right. As is the case with most songwriters, you might not know Bale'wa by name but you know his music guaranteed. If you want to get a little history on Bale'wa and his start into music check out my homie's Zo's blog which takes us back to the early days of being in Mohammad's group The Transitions and his hit work with Jaheim. Good research Zo.

Add another to the Danja list!

Britney Spears and The Clutch

As with the case of any true circus we always get more then we bargained for and this holds true for Britney Spears' own Circus with the newly leaked bonus tracks from her album including 2 by The Clutch. Check out:

"Phonography"

and

"Trouble"

Both tracks are dope in their own ways but what takes them to that next level is the vocals and vocal production. Who you ask is doing the echos, harmonies, and adlibs? No it's not Britney and no it's not Keri which only leaves one left, yep Candice Nelson. She never ceases to amaze. Yet though you want to say it's Candice or at least a woman on the "eh eh eh" parts after the chorus on "Phonography" that's actually Zeke.

So now that you've heard the album in it's entirety, how does it compare to Blackout?

Is you is or is you ain't my Danja: James Fauntleroy "Abducted"

In the continuing saga of the mysterious-more-than-likely Danja beat, a new player is now involved. First we had K Young's "Incredible" than there was Casley's "Crush On You" and now we have James Fauntleroy's version of the track rechristened "Abducted" that has just arrived. Take a listen:

So who's your favorite of the 3? Be on the watch for a 4th version soon I'm sure.

Cassie confirms "a couple others" with Danja

In a recent interview Cassie talked about her upcoming album including a little more from Danja:

DX: Who did you work with on the new album?

Cassie: When it first started, I was working with B.Cox and Jim Jonsin and who else? A few others. I worked with Rodney Jerkins. Then time passed and I started working with Mario Winans and Puff in the studio. Just recently, I got in the studio with Pharrell and did some stuff with Kanye [West]. There’s a little bit of everything. Oh, and Danja did the single and a couple of others.

HipHopDX: So, how would you describe the sound on this new record?

Cassie: The sound is, you know…it’s hard to even explain because at this point, I’ve recorded so many different records. Some which are on totally different opposite ends of the spectrum and we’re going to pick songs in probably like a few months. So, it’s kind of hard to explain the direction. But, the main direction of the songs that I really love is that they’re just big records that people will love to sing. I have a couple that are a little sensual and a little bit more grown up. I’m not saying I grew up and I want to be gratuitous or anything. But, there are songs that are for my age group and there are songs that are for an age group a little younger, because I have a younger fan base too.

I wonder if that might mean more Clutch too. Stay tuned!

Video: Rihanna "Rehab"

Boring video.

None the less, great look for Hannon Lane. I hope the track does well.

Joe Budden addresses unheard Timbaland track

The year was 2006 and Joe Budden's highly anticipated 2nd album The Growth was right around the corner. Budden did a blitz of interviews hyping up the album and continually talked about his hopeful first single featuring Fabolous titled "Whatcha Doin' Tonight" produced by Timbaland. We couldn't wait! One of the most talked about MCs at the time hooking up with Timbaland for a hip hop beat versus the pop sound Timbo had started to create.

So we waited...

And waited...

And waited...

There was pushbacks and then label issues and then no label then a different label and another album, more mixtapes but still no Budden/Timbo track. In the midst of it all a very short snippet (and very rare) snippet of the track did appear but still I asked, what ever happened to the track?

Finally that question has finally been answered. In a recent interview Budden talked about his long coveted Timbaland track:

BallerStatus.com: A lot of these rappers feel they need A-list production to break into mainstream. Do you feel you need a Just Blaze or Timbaland to do that?

Joe Budden: No, I got a Timbaland track in my computer right now that I paid $100 grand for that never came out, that I never did anything with. So just because you go to these big name producers doesn't mean, doesn't guarantee that you're going to come away a record. When you're independent, the way I am this second, it doesn't really make sense to go spend $30, 40, 50, 60, 70 grand on a beat. That doesn't make sense. You just need to go harder with beat selection. I got a track on my first album called "Give Me A Reason" that Just Blaze produced that everybody hated. So I mean it don't really guarantee that, but I love Just Blaze, let me say that.

Let's hope one day this track will surface.

You know Budden brings up a good point: in the rough times of today's music era, is it better to spend a lot of money and go with an A list producer or stick with a cheaper up and comer? What do you think?

Timbaland and Chris Cornell will inspire you

Chris Cornell and Timbaland will appear on the Sundance TV channel next month as part of a special new series called "The Inspiration Sessions", which will feature "four dynamic artist and producer pairings and the candid free-flowing conversation that ensues as they produce an album together". A new episode of "The Inspiration Sessions" will premiere each week during the 13-part series "Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…", which also features behind-the-scenes footage of Costello's guests discussing the artists and the music that inspired them.

"Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…" is sponsored by luxury automaker Infiniti and will be premiered in the US on Wednesday, December 3 at 9 PM ET. The series also will be broadcast on CTV in Canada and Channel 4 in the UK, beginning later this year.

We'll try and get you these inspirational videos as they come out so stay tuned!

"Apologize" becomes one of United States biggest

D.O.E on MTV's Mixtape Monday

The buzz on D.O.E's new mixtape The Death of John Doe: The Rise of D.O.E. continues with MTV sitting down with him to talk about the album.

"I'm letting everybody know it's a new me. It's not John Doe no more. I came in the game, '04, I signed to Timbaland as John Doe. A lot happened. Situation with Interscope didn't go right at first. I fell on my face, couldn't put music out. Went flat broke. It was crazy. Then big homie put me on 'The Way I Are.' We started touring around the world, getting money. I had to let everyone know what it was. People were like, 'Son, what happened to you?' Too many questions. I put it all in one CD for free.

"It [the track "Streets Been Watching"] basically explains how dudes was looking at me sideways. I fell on my face. Dudes was looking at me crazy. I explained everything, how I went from [owning] a Hummer to [riding] the train. Sh-- was deep, D. On 'Bottom of the Barrel,' I talk about my hard times and how it wouldn't stop me. I was gonna get to the top."

If you haven't picked up your copy of D.O.E's mixtape make sure to stop by his
new website and download a free copy. Also make sure to be on the lookout for a new video from D.O.E very soon.

Here's a possible track off of KC's Pre Album album coming December 12. The Danja produced "You Know What You Doin'":

Thoughts?

Props to Frederick on the track.

Nicole Scherzinger "Physical"

The clip of this song came out well over a year ago and since that time then we've heard countless "full" versions of the track which always turned out to be looped versions of the snippet.

Until now...

We finally have the real full length version of the Timbaland and Danja produced "Physical" from Nicole's sadly shelved album Her Name Is Nicole. Check it out:

BIG props to Buddha on the track!

On a side note we're still working on finding a decent music hosting site so bare with us as we test a few out. If ya'll got any recommendations hit me up!

Who Flipped It Better: DJ Babu Vs. Timbaland (Fixed Links)

I'm really hyped for this segment for Who Flipped It Better because it involves one of the best turntablilists in the world, DJ Babu. I've been a big fan of his since his days of the Beat Junkies and as he transitioned into the underground hip hop trio Dilated People's. I've also had the pleasure of seeing Babu live multiple times and to actually see what he does on on 2 turntables is to hard to describe. You have to see it to believe it so check out this video of his skills.

Anyhow let's get down to business. The year was 2001 and Timbaland & Magoo released their fan favorite Indecent Proposal (sorry ya'll Under Consturtion is the best in my book). The album featured guests from extended Timbo family members Petey Pablo, Sin, Sebastian, Ms. Jade, Skillz, and introduced a new voice to the family the one and only Tweet (how amazing is "Love Me"??) The track we're going to look at today is "Baby Bubba" featuring Petey Pablo. Here it is:

4 years later in 2005 the SonGodsSuns released their album Over The Counter Culture that including the title track of the same name produced by the one and only DJ Babu. Check it out:

Hear the sample in both? Listen carefully. So Who Flipped It Better? And the bonus question: What's the name of the sample?

Big time props to Big A for the good ears.

More Keri Hilson behind the scenes of "Turnin' Me On"

DJ Freestyle Steve introduces: The EriAm Sisters

If any of you have ever met Freestyle Steve you know he's a real cool, laid back dude so when he asked me to come meet his new artists he was working with, I didn't hesitate. Little did I know that I would end up having my first studio experience, meet 3 young sisters with talent far beyond their years, and run into a Chronicles reader all along the way.

Last week I told you about the 10 year old singing phenom named Haben who unexpectedly performed at the Chris Cornell show here in Seattle as an opener. Haben is 1/3 of the sister trio The EriAm Sisters originally from Eritrea, Africa but have now settled in Seattle, Washington. Lianda, 14, Salina, 13, and Haben, 10, come from a musical family so since birth singing has always been a part of who they were and come natural to each of them. They would spend countless nights singing "Silent Night" and "Killing Me Softly", learning how to harmonize with one another and perfect their voices. As their confidence grew and their familiarity with one another's range and pitch became solidified, people started to pay attention. Parents and teachers alike noticed that these girls weren't just singing for fun rather they really had special gift. Soon the sisters were singing at local city and cultural events and posting videos via myspace and youtube visited by thousands all across the world. Little did Salina, Lianda, and Haben know that on the other side of the country a talkshow, The Maury Povitch Show, was on the search for America's next talented kids for it's new series.

Having run across the sister's youtube page, the show called on Haben to perform as part of the future kids of tomorrow. Despite a bad cold, Haben performed an amazing rendition of the Beyonce classic "Irreplaceable" much to the surprise of the stunned crowd. Only 10 years old?!? Though she didn't win the contest, the word was out and soon the sisters website was flooded with millions of visitors. Everyone wanted to know just who were The EriAm Sisters.

So there I was sitting in the studio with Freestyle, listening to a banging beat by legendary west coast producer J Silva (Lil' Wayne, E-40, Daz Dillinger, Kurupt), mouth wide open as I listened to 10 year old Haben belt out a song as if she'd been in the business 20 years. Again only 10 years old!? We spent all afternoon in the studio as I watched Ron Silver, the sisters, and Steve create the catchy and age appropriate track "When I Grow Up". Yet as if the day couldn't get any better, I end up talking to an engineer at the studio who just happened to be a Chronicles reader himself. Irony or meant to be? At the end of the day I left thankful for the experience and eager to hear more from the sisters in the future.

So will Timbaland be working with the sisters? That's definitely a possibility but in the meantime be on the lookout for much, much more from The EriAm Sisters. Currently, they are ranked in the top 20 R&B/Soul artists on Reverb Nation, they have a charity that is continuously expanding, and along with Freestyle's full time collaboration be on the look out for a single in early 2009. Stay tuned!

A BIG shout out to Freestyle and my dude Tryfe at Pacific Studios!
