2006 The Year Of Timbaland?

As 2006 comes to a close what do you all say it, was it Timbaland's year? Did he dominate Pop music? What about radio? Do you feel he was recognized for his work? And looking into next year how excited are you to hear what he's got for us?

In my opinion, Tim didn't necessarily dominate the airwaves even though he did have three #1 hits including the biggest of his career. What Timbo did do is once again change the sound of music. Furtado's and more so Timberlake's albums were sonically on another level. What other track this year sounded even close to "My Love"? "Promiscuous" and "Maneater" brought the 80s back to Pop music but not in the typical let's-sample-an-80s-song sort of way.

I say wait until next year when I'm pretty positive you'll start hearing the copy cats. They're always a step behind The King and they come in droves. I suspect too that yet again Timbo will switch up his sound. So with all this said here's a list of confirmed 2006 Timbo tracks that did not make the final cut on various albums (props to Bigmac!):

Lloyd Banks "My House"
Lloyd Banks "Rotten Apple"
Ludacris "Based On A True Story"
Jojo "Show I Can"
LL Cool J unkown title
Kardinall Offishall unknown title
The Game "Ol' English"
Jay-Z "Your Favorite"

Happy New Year everyone!!

More of Timbaland's Diary

Here's yet another clip of Tim and Danja makin' magic:

I'd give anything to be with Tim in the studio!

New Tim Article

Check out this new article on Timmy. Despite the leak it looks like "Give It To Me" will be the first single but I can assure you, if I know Timbo, the track will be different in some way than the leaked version. Whether it be the beat or the lyrics, somehow I'm sure it will be tweaked.

I can't wait for the new album. Rumored artists on the new album include: Kanye West, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, 50 Cent, She Wants Revenge, The Hives, M.I.A, Nicole from the Pussycat Dolls, and Elton John (lol!) Where the heck is Missy, Sebastian, DOE, and Keri? Hmmm guess we'll have to wait and see....

So who won?

Cast your vote HAHHA! I think I won, I mean it's pretty obvious (to me). Czar somehow you cheated, I don't know how yet but I know you did. I think you're really a robot or as I've said before you're really Hannon Lane. That would explain a lot actually hahha...

Naa in all honesty I got my ass served to me raw with no salt OR pepper. There is a reason why Czar is the master (and famous LOL) and I am the student. BUT mark my words this isn't over, not even close. There will be other sample wars and you can promise Boogie won't disappoint. I'm a tireless researcher and an endless question asker so you can bet I'll come a lot harder next time.

Truth be told be on the lookout for future projects involving Tim's samples. Czar, Big A, and I are kicking around some ideas for all the stans.

Merry Christmas to all of you! I hope you have a great holiday whatever your plans. Be safe and have fun and we'll see you later on this week!

One,
Boogie

The Last Battle

Again Czar what the heck is one of your "sample mixes"? I've never heard of them. I have a feeling you must have a team of people who work with you to get these samples if your making "mixes". Maybe it should be C-Z-A-R and T-E-A-M huh? Hhaha

Ok so let's start with an easy one: Timbaland & Magoo did the classic "Luv 2 Luv U Remix" The remix was better than the original by far. Well in typical Timmy fashion he took The JBs "Giving Up Food For Funk" for pretty much the entire bass line.

Let me guess it was in one of your "sample mixes" Czar? Yeah whatever to that. Here's another one that I found a bit interesting. Seems there is some confusion on what exactly Timbo sampled for Missy's "Xtasy" Yes he samples more than once which I'm sure Czar will tell you but the drums come from the J-Dilla callabo, J-88's "Stupid Lies" If ya'll can learn anything from this entry it's to go and buy J-88's album as it is seriously a classic.

So Czar that's what I got for this war. I promise you there will be others so try and come with some samples that are somewhat original. It's hard to see you down there son....

And so it ends...

Well Boogie, you put up a good fight. I'm surprised by the fact that you continued to try and beat me, even though you knew it was useless. So I'll let you off with your diginity on this one.

First, you're half right on the "X-tasy" sample...but you should really check out Sly and the Family Stone's track "In Time." This is the actual track that Tim sampled for "X-tasy."

Second, I think someone said that I'll win this battle if I posted "This." LMAO!

Maybe you should pay attention to my mixes...you might learn a thing or two.

Say it loud, say it proud: CZAR!

I can do this blind folded

"Sample Mix"? I have to say I've never heard any of your sample mixes Czar. Sad thing is that Jade sample was the first Timbo sample I ever found so if your just now putting on one of your "mixes" you're a little behind the times son. Do you need the sample of Missy's "The Rain" for your Samplex Mix 15 in 5 years? Poor guy...

Speaking of Missy, let's look at her "Whatcha Gon Do" . One of my favorite Missy tracks just cuz she killed it on the adlibs and of course the beat.

Now you've mentioned Fela Kuti before Czar and I have a feeling you don't even know who he is or where he's from. I suggest you read about him as he is one of the greatest revolutionaries/musicians of our time. He did this brillinat track called "Colonial Mentality" that Mr. Mosley thought he'd take a bite out of for Missy.

Let me guess that was planned for the sample mix 9 right? Catch up little man I know it's hard!

Boogie

I smell desperation...

Well Boogie...sad to say it, but you're YEARS late on "Colonial Mentality." That was on one of my first mixes. So sad Boogie...so sad...

Anyway, since you're going to do Fela, I'll bring Fela back into too. Probably one of my favorite songs off Ms. Jade's highly slept on 2002 album "Girl Interrurpted," was a song that didn't even feautre Jade at all. The "Interlude" is all Timbo backed by a funky groove. The track samples "Oloufe Mi" (re-titled later as "Lover") by Fela Kuti. This song was one of Fela's earliest songs with the band Koola Lobitos, before his music became very political.

Wanna give this one last try again J?

It's on...

I'm surprsied Boogie. This is the first time that you posted a sample that wasn't on any of my mixes. The "Feel the Girl" sample is actually slated to be on Vol. 8, but I'll forgive you for that one lol.

Since you wanna pull stuff that's not on my mixes, I thought I would share something with everyone that is not on any of my mixes and that might be on Vol. 8. I know y'all probably thought that the "you ready" sample on Justin Timberlake's "SexyBack" was just some sound Tim had on his keyboard. Well...it's actually taken from a song by Eddie Bo called "Hook and Sling." Tim is just crazy for sampling that at the beginning of the track. I don't think anyone would have sampled that.

And Boogie, how are you gonna post ONE sample to "Right Now & Later On?" You know there are two right? You must have completely "forgotten" about the sampled drum pattern. For those who don't know (this includes you Boogie lol), Tim sampled the drums from The Meters' track "Jungle Man."

You finished J, or do you want some more of this beating?
Spell it out with me: C-Z-A-R

Fire with Fire...

You know Boogie, I thought I would give you a head start before I just put a big hurt on ya. And you know after I fudged the fake timbo post (sorry y'all), I'm going to come out swingin. So let's begin...

Round 1: Boogie, you started off with a world music sample, so I thought I'd return the favor: Raje Shwari ft. Timbaland - "Indian Style" This was Raje's buzz single that got some good airplay by some BBC radio stations (shout out to DJ Markie Mark and the whole Punjabi Hit Squad!). I was feelin' the song until I realized that the ENTIRE song concept (lyrics, melody, EVERYTHING) was based off this Bollywood film song "No. 1 Punjabi" from the 2001 film "Chori Chori Chupke Chupke." You can see that Raje and Tim just took the whole song and just added some English every once in a while.

Now you know I couldn't stop with just that. Did you know that the drum pattern for the track is also sampled? Yep, it samples the Punjabi folk tune "Dhola Ve Dhola." So there you have it. The melody, the lyrics, the drum pattern, everything was the combination of "No. 1 Punjabi" and "Dhola Ve Dhola."

Round 2: Again Boogie, since you wanted to do TV themes, I'll play fair and do a TV theme as well. One of my favorite songs off Tim's Bio has to be "Talking on the Phone." The track is just insane! But did you know that the main beat samples a the theme from a TV cartoon? Yup, it samples the one and only "Fat Albert Theme Song." Tim did an amazing job of chopping this sample, instead of just straight up looping like he did with another TV theme song *cough* "Underdog" *cough*

Damn, I just killed you in one thread Boogie. Funny thing is, I haven't even given you my best. Let's see what ya got.

C-z-a-r

The next battle...

Excuse me a second *YAWN* Czar that's all you got? Come on now son I don't think you're ready. Here pay attention: Let's take a look at this interesting gem. We all know Ms Jade's "Feel The Girl" don't we? Sick ass drums and definitely a very slept on first single. Well it actually samples Macedonian musician Vlatko Stefanovski's "Gipsy Song"

Czar stick to the easy Indian samples and kiddie Theme songs while I move on and take you to international school!

After givin' it a little thought let's go ahead and throw in a little extra just for kicks. Fabolous has a Timbo track "Right Now Later On" which samples this track by The Meter's called "Just Kissed My Baby"

So what ya' got for me Czar?

Tuesday, December 19, 2006

The war continues...

So where is Czar? Is he plotting a good sample to use? Or is he scared? ha ha! We'll have to wait and see. In the meantime let me bring yet another body blow to the Master. I bring you Playa's "Gravy Train" Unfortunately there is no full/non DJ version of this track and it was never released except on a Def Soul mixtape from back when Playa was signed to Def Jam.

So what's the sample used in the track? An Indian track? Maybe even some obscure Italian country song? No actually it's from the 1964 cartoon Underdog. Timbo sampled the Theme Song from the cartoon. Yet again Timbaland proves why he is a genius.

"Have no fear Underdog is here!!!"

The Sample Wars: Czar Vs. J-Boogie

I thought I'd mix it up a little this week and have a little "war" with Czar. He is without question the Sample King and he has now got me addicted to collecting samples. I've spent a lot of time diggin' around and seeing what I could find and wanted to show off my skills. I wanted to school the master on what the pupil has learned. So bring it Czar! Let's see what you got!

Round 1: Justin Timberlake's "(Oh No) What You Got" A hot Timbo beat over some smooth JT vocals but do you know the sample? The sample is Debka Druz's "The Debka of the Druz" Many people seem to think the sample is Israeli, it's even been credited that way on many websites but in fact the track is Syrian.

Oh but that's not all, J Boogie don't just give you the sample like some cats...hahah

Sixx John, a talented MC and a producer for Ne-Yo, used to be signed with Big Tank. Now Big Tank as you all know used to produce for Timbaland productions (check Queen Latifah's "Go Head") so isn't it fitting that Tank used the Debka sample BEFORE Timbo did for Timberlake. The track in question? Sixx John's Debka Druz's "Break Tha Rulez"

You don't want none of this Czar....

20,000 Hits!!

The Chronicles has just reached 20,000 hits which blows my mind. What started out as an idea to start a different kind of Timbaland site, different from anything that's out there to date, has grown into a respectable website that people come to for their Timbaland fix.

I recently put up a virtual map to get an idea of who was tuning into The Chronicles and as it turns out people from over 34 countries around the world have paid us a visit!! This goes to show that the genius of Timbo spans the entire globe and that music truly is universal.

Let me say a big THANK YOU to all of you for making this site successful. It would be nothing without your support and input so I say again thank you!! Shout out to my Beatclub family, the Stans Of The Tim Table, Big A and Czar my stans for life, THE Timbalandchick (my sis), and to Sebastian, DOE, Keri, Raje, Medina, Brian Kidd, Hannon, and all the other mad cool and humble musicians thank you.

I hope to continue this site for another 20,000 damn another 200,000 hits and so on. You all are great and keep that Timbo stan in all of us on going.

Big props to ya'll,
J-Boogie

Czar's Samples of the Week

Sorry for the late post, I've been a bit busy this week. BUT, I'm back, it's still a new week, which means it's time again for Czar's Sample(s) of the Week.

So last week, I hinted that this week's sample was going to come from none other than Missy "Misdameanor" Elliott. At first I was only going to showcase one sample, but then I decided let's just do two.

So the first sample comes from Missy's 2001 hit "Get Ur Freak On" from the album "Miss E...So Addictive." Everyone probably mispronounced the Indian vocal sample that comes right after missy says "Hollaaaaa/got the feelin' son/let me throw you some," and probably wondered where the hell Tim found that track. The Indian track is called "Larka" and it comes from one of the Indian sample CDs that Tim used a lot during this time, Deepest India.

Off the same album, Missy's "Old School Joint" samples just that, an old school joint. The track samples "Pop It" from the 80s r&b band One Way. It doesn't sound like Tim actually sampled the track, just re-played it, but it's still worth a listen.

That's it for this week. Stay tuned for next week because I guarantee it's going to be crazy!

Peace,
Czar

New Petey Pablo "Stick Up Man"

This hot track just came to my attention and I wanted to make sure to share it. Is it new? I have no idea. DId Timbaland produce it? Hmmm sounds like it. How's the beat? SICCCCK! Check it:

Petey Pablo "Stick Up Man"

If this isn't Timbo, it's pretty big bite. That sample is dope and as usual Tim let's the beat ride makin' sure we all know who the star of the track is. It's a BANGER for sure! What ya'll think?

Meg Murray

As I was roaming around the internet one day I came across a woman named Meg Murray who had previous ties with Timbaland. She has a few CDs out, including one from '02 that mentioned she had worked with Timbaland. Now of course I can't just read something like that and leave it at that, no I gotta go the next step(s). So after some digging, I was able to contact Meg and asked her a few questions about her association with Tim. Here is what she wrote me:

"I was introduced to Timbaland by Bill Pettaway, a songwriter/producer/amazing guitar player from Annapolis Md, my hometown. Bill plays guitar on a large amount of Timbaland productions, and he got me the hook-up with Tim in 1999.

I had a production contract with Timbaland in 1999 and I met with him in New York and wrote and recorded demos at Manhattan Center Sound with his writers during that time. Tim oversaw what we worked on and pitched me to labels in 2000 but I never got a record deal.

Britney Spears and Christina Aguliera were just hitting the scene, and I was more of a rock-R&B performer, playing live gigs 300 nights a year, so the market wasn't looking for my type, they were looking for young pop tarts at the time. C'est la vie!!

Timbaland was super-cool and gracious, and I was able to learn so much about the art of recording & production from hanging out with and watching Tim, Jimmy Douglass and the other engineers make their magic. I got to be a fly on the wall and got a crash course in Grade A Music Business and Creative Genius. Timbaland is truly cutting edge and pushes the envelope. It was like going to graduate school!!

None of the songs on my CD "Ready" were produced or written by Timbaland.

I re-recorded and re-produced a few of the songs from the New York sessions at home in Annapolis after my production contract ran out. Those are the songs you hear on the CD "Ready". Making that CD in Annapolis was a learning project for myself and Todd Kreuzburg as we ventured into the world of professional recording by computer. Self-taught.

The songs #2 "Be Straight" #4 "Get By" #7 "Perfect" and #8 "The Words" are songs that I co-wrote with Todd Walcsmuth and Robert Cadence in New York during our sessions in 1999-2000 that Timbaland heard, and those songs were definitely created to please him. Tim used other unreleased versions of some of those tunes to shop me for a deal.

Back in Annapolis, Todd Kreuzburg and I re-worked them and re-recorded them, learning to record on the computer as we went along- and they ended up on the "Ready" CD.

Not a lot of my friends and peers dug the CD when it came out in 2002- they thought it was "too hip-hop" or "too computer", but as I listen to it now, though there are a lot of technical things I could nit-pick and change, the overall spirit of the CD has held up well I think. But I am prejudice because it is my baby!!!

There are a few demo songs from those New York-Timbaland sessions that were not put on the "Ready" CD but will come out on my next release."

So there you have a bit of information you may not have known. I encourage everyone to go check out her myspace and her website She's got a unique voice and seems like yet another great talent in the music world!

New Sebastian track "Hungry"

Sebastian is lettin' the public KNOW what's up! Here's an older track by him that was just leaked today. Tim's bringin' the normal heat on this slow banger and Seb's getting a little help from Ms. Jade and Sin (nice to hear this guy again) It's cool to hear the old Beat Club crew together again over a laid back Timbo beat. Look for Sebastian's new album out soon!

Check it: Sebastian F/ Timbaland, Sin & Ms. Jade "Hungry"

Props to Sebastian for the ok and props to DOE for lettin' us hear it first. You too Hypnotic!

Senator Jimmy D

Jimmy Douglass is a legend in the music game. Most people know him as Senator Jimmy D, the engineer for Timbland but his story starts way before that. Jimmy's worked with The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Aretha Franklin, and Hall & Oates to name but a FEW. He's considered one of the best, if not the best engineer in the music industry today. He has what's been called a "magical ear" and it only seems fitting that he and Timbaland work so well together.

There's not a lot of information on Jimmy as there should be but I was able to find a few very interesting articles. This first article talks about how Jimmy started out and his story on how he came to meet Timbo. This second article talks more about what equipment he uses and how he creates the sound he does. This last article Jimmy talks a lot about using Pro Tools and how he makes it work for him.

Finally here's a summarized list of Jimmy Douglass' Discography over the years. It's important to know that's it's not just Timbaland making the music but that he has a very good team around him helping to create those beats we all know and love. Tim only picks the best! Shout out to my man Big A for the info!

Sunday, December 10, 2006

Simon Illa

Simon Illa is a known production figure in the Philly scene having produced for many local artists as well as the The Eagles and Phillies. He's worked with Vivian Green, Floetry, Onyx and Smitty to name but a few. He has recently signed a management deal with Timbo's camp and has been in Miami working with Tim on new material.

Illa produced the lead single off of Philly rapper Cyssero's debut album, "Protege of the Game" on The Game's Black Wall Street label. The single is called "So Fresh" and samples the Kool and the Gang's track "Fresh"

Illa is definitely doin' big things in production. Check out his myspace page to see the latest news as well as see Illa behind the boards. Also check out his website for all sorts of information on him.

Don't sleep on Illa cuz dude is doing major things in the music game!

Czar's Sample of the Week

What's up y'all,

It's a new week, and that means a new Timbaland sample. This time I thought I would bring you all a sample from one of the best unreleased pop albums of the 2000s: Kiley Dean's "Simple Girl."

A while back I posted the sample to one of my favorite songs off that album, "Kiss Me Like That." This week, I thought I would share a sample from another one of my favorite songs from the album, "No." The song has a nice bounce, and Raje Shwari just kills it at the end. Anyway, the song samples "Sorrow Tears & Blood" from the musician and political activist Fela Kuti. If you don't know anything about Fela, you need to buy his music and google him now. He was an amazing artist with timeless music, and an influential human rights activist that is truly missed.

So that's it for this week's installment of Czar's Sample of the Week. Check back next week for something that will make you hee hee hee hee ha, hee hee hee hee hee hee ha.

Peace,
Czar
P.S. This won't be the last time you'll see Fela's name pop up on Czar's Sample of the Week...

The Timbaland Snub

This year's Grammy nominations were announced yesterday and all I can say is where the heck is Timbaland? Dude WAS 2006 plain and simple. Now I'm not going to go bad mouth anyone in the game as the music industry is already in pretty bad shape but that's even more reason to honor someone who changes how we hear music.

I've prided myself on keep The Chronicles as opinion free as possible and instead let the information, news, music, samples etc speak for itself but whether you like or dislike Tim, one thing everyone can agree on is Timbaland is a music revolutionary. He's taken and continues to take music where no one thought they could take it.

Now here in 2006 with all this repetitive and boring "hits" we call music, Tim (and some may argue Danja) took us on a journey away from the norm yet again. This time with his brilliance in tow, he took POP music of all things and created yet another way we listen to it. Nelly Furtado's "Promiscuous" and Justin Timberlake's "My Love" fit no category yet they were both #1 songs of the year. He created a brand new sound for both of them and diversied their sound to the point of experimental.

He also did it with Danity Kane and The Pussycat Dolls and just when you thought Tim had completely gone pop, at the end of the year he comes HARD with Snoop's "Get A Light" and Jeezy's "3AM" just to remind us he can still make them bangin' rap tracks. Am I biased? Of course but come on T Bone Burnett gets the nod over Timbo? Can you name a T Bone Burnett track?

Despite the obvious snub the the best part is 2007 is commin': new Tim album, Keri Hilson, D.O.E, Bjork, M.I.A, Sebastian, and even more Tim sonic stew. My ears are excited!

Timbaland & M.I.A in the studio

**** EDIT Once again the videos have been taken down. This is due to copyright infringement which we here at The Chronicles did not know about until recently. We will not be reposting the video but look forward to seeing more Timbo in the studio real soon ****

First and foremost BIG THANKS to nOtO for givin' us the re-up on not 1 but 2 videos. I got wonder how you got the DVD already homie. Hmm is this Byrd? Anyhow check out the videos:

It doesn't get much better than this! nOtO thank you SO much my man! Go tell a friend ya'll...

Busta Rhymes and Timbo in the studio

Sure you could consider this "old" but no matter how many times I watch it I can't get over Busta's face when he hears that beat.

Hope this tracks makes the final cut for Busta's next album cuz the beat is fire!

The Ugly People

During the making of Under Construction II, Tim and Magoo met up with a crew named The Ugly People. Here check this video:

What's interesting is in the video, Alliwishis Kay-Os raps what became Tim's 2nd verse on the final version of "Don't Make Me Take It There" Also Frank Lee White is rapping what became Tim's first verse on "Throwback" So Tim did have some help writing rhymes for the album.

J Nitti produced "Don't Make Me Take It There" and went on to apparently produce Attitude's "For Free". How else Ugly People fit into the Tim camp is a mystery. I have a feeling they did other writing and J Nitti produced other tracks for Tim's artists but I can't say for sure.

New Sebastian tracks

Sebastian breaks us off with yet more exclusive Timbaland joints. Go check out Sebastian's fan myspace and check out the new tracks. Add to the fan group and come chat with Sebastian himself. Every Wednesday and Friday nights at 9PM Eastern Time go and chat with the real Sebastian. The dude is mad cool and incredibly humble so go and join.

As far as the tracks go well I wouldn't be J Boogie if I didn't give you the break down so here it is:

New tracks:

- Can't Stop Us
- Beat Club
- Stomped Out
- Ready
- We At It Again (Original Version) This is the 6th version of this track, 3 of which have completely different beats
- Fried Chick Freestyle (same beat as D.O.E's "You Don't Believe Me" which means this was the original track before DOE's)
- Drama is the alternate "I See Dead People" version but it has an additional 5 seconds making it 4:25 versus the cut off version we all had at 4:20.
- It's Your Night is an alternate version as the whole hallway scene between Tim and the 2 girls like in the original is deleted, instead it just continues.

Props to Sebastian as always!

Ms. Jade goes at Scott Storch

Ms. Jade ain't havin' that Sotrch diss so she decided to jump on a hot Just Blaze beat and go at him. Check out the diss track "Beam Me Up Scotty"

Jade sounds hungry!! and that beat is tight. Very smart move for Jade to let peeps know she's still on top of her game and to get a little shine on. Let's all hope that she hooks back up with Timmmy for a new album or if anything actually releases somethin' here soon.

Tight diss!

Tweet is back!

What better way to follow up our Tweet samples of the week Tweet then to let you all know Tweet is back. She has a myspace and 2 new tracks "Whisper" and "See Ya". Both songs are the soft on the senses with amazing harmonies smooth tracks we have grown to love from her.

In my opinion Tweet's music is timeless. Southern Hummingbird was a classic and It's Me Again was one of the most slept on albums ever created. I'm hoping a 3rd album is in the works.

Go show this woman some love!!

Czar's Sample of the Week

It's that time again. New week, new Timbo sample. I'm gonna give y'all two samples because both of them are real short.

For those who don't know Tim has been using sample CDs for a while, and in 2001 he started using a lot of Indian sample cds. The two sample CDs that seemed to be his favorite in 2001 were "Spices of India" and "Deepest India". Both are produced by the same company Zero-G.

So the two samples for this week are coming from the Southern Hummingbird, Tweet. Tweet got her big break with "Oops (Oh My)". If you didn't know there was a sample in this track, listen closesly to the subtle percussion sound. It's taken from the Spcies of India track "Mod Dafinda Speeds". If you still can't hear the sample, take a listen to the "Oops (Oh My) Timstrumental." .

Soon after Oops (Oh My) came out, Tweet and Tim brought us "Call Me". This "flute sample" from Deepest India was used again and again by other artists like the Bombay Rockers and the Rishi Rich Project (for those of us who listen to desi beats).

So there you have it, two samples from two of Tim's biggest hits of 2001. As always, look out for the next installment of Czar's Sample of the Week.

Pz,
Czar
