Sample Of The Week

It's Boogie here filling in for the Czar of samples. This week I have a sample that came from a band who's album was so new at the time that they prevented the song Timbo sampled it in from being released.

The track I'm talking about is on of my favorite tracks from him, Chris Cornell's unreleased "Why Do You Follow Me." Here refresh your memory:

So why was a dope song like this cut from the album? More than likely due to its sample. What sample you ask? It comes from the brilliant threesome Peter, Bjorn, and John (go see them live!) and their song "Nothing To Worry About":

Such a dope video! As is turns out the trio's new album at the time Living Things came out only 3 weeks after Chris Cornell's Scream. A little too close for comfort it seems hence their reluctance in giving permission to use the sample.

Bonus question: What's the other sample in "Why Do You Follow Me"? Hint: Think "Bounce"

Props to E-Gone for the find!

T.I. "Here We Go Again" New Song or Old Freestyle?

Turns out that unlike other mixtapes with a produced by Timbaland track, T.I. comes with a never been heard Tim track. FINALLY!! After all these years we get to hear the first T.I. (solo) track produced by Timbaland. Check out T.I.'s "Here We Go Again" from his newest mixtape ironically titled Fuck A Mixtape:

Is this the same track that Timbaland and T.I. created over 3 years ago? Could be....

Let's hope we get the non-DJ version soon! Props to all those you sent it to me.

Rebel Springs A Leak

I’m sure you know by now but just in case you missed it, 11 tracks by the group Rebel leaked late last month with some serious wonder of who exactly produced them. Here are the titles:

-Get In Fit In
-Have You Made Love Lately
-Is This What They Call Love
-Reloaded
-Roses
-Shoulda Coulda
-Snows In July
-Strung Out
-Who Are You
-Wifey
-Disappearing Acts

If you want to hear them, go digging, it's worth it.

All these tracks are more than likely produced solely by Jim Beanz though there could be the possibility that Timbo assisted (though I personally doubt it). The last track is one you should pay attention to as it’s the same “Disappearing Acts” that was an unrelased track off Ginuwine’s last album.

Who produced the track? Hard to say. Some say Beanz, some say Timbaland and Beanz. Automatically you want to say it’s written and produced by Timbo and Beanz, but James Fauntleroy singing on a Jim Beanz written track? Why if Fauntleroy is a writer in his own right and Jim could sing on his own written track? Not a common thing to do but hey could be.

What do you all think?

50 Cent "You Should Be Dead"

As we watched Timbaland’s MTV Diary many years back, we all wondered “wait, I’ve never heard that beat before, who’s it for?” One of those beats (heard at the beginning of the now famous scene of Busta & Tim in the studio) turned out to be 50 Cent’s “You Should Be Dead” which was supposed to be on Fiddy’s Curtis but never made the cut. Even before Diary though we had that track parked on our Unreleased Confirmed list for long time (thanks Nick!).

Eventually we got a snippet, then an even longer snippet, and now finally we have the full version. Check out 50’s “You Should Be Dead” produced by Timbo and Danja:

You think it should have been on the album?

Bonus question: What’s the “rock-a-bye baby” sample?

Timbaland at 2010 Cannes

Timbaland played host in the VIP Room at this year's Cannes Film Festival and who showed up?? None other than the "Dancing On The Ceiling" legend, Lionel Ritchie! Check it out:

Here a few more clips:

Looks like a fun time! Props to Raphael on the info.

Solve the Mystery

I'll just leave this one up to all of you to figure out. The clues are: it's an apparent interpolation and it's from a recent Timbaland produced track:

Can you name the track? And if so do you think it's an interpolation?

Usher "Mayday"

Here's a track from the Royal Court/Timbaland sessions from a few years ago called "Mayday." Check it out:

Not my favorite track and I can see (and hear) why it was left off the album. Hwoever, there definitely are a few repeat Timbaland sounds in this track we've heard before, can you name them?

Yes of course the obvious is from TLC's "Dirty Dirty""

but what about the others?

Timbaland Settles Lawsuit

Did ya’ll know that Timbaland was facing a lawsuit regarding “Throw It On Me” from Shock Value? Nope me neither. Seems Tim is facing (another) copyright infringement claim regarding the sample of the song “Spazz” by The Elastik Band that he used in “Throw It On Me.” The Timbaland camp settled with the song’s composer David Cortopassi for an undisclosed sum.

Just for kicks, take a listen to The Elastik Band’s “Spazz”:

And now compare it to Tim’s “Throw It On Me”

Clear them samples Timbo!

Version #4857 of "Talk That" featuring....

Lil' Wayne!

Bassment flashback - Danny Boy

BossPlayya Roderick checking in. It's been a minute since I did this, but about a month ago, the looooooooooooong awaited debut album by Danny Boy dropped.

Wait. “Danny Who?” I can hear y’all asking yourselves. Danny Boy (real name) is an R&B singer haling from Chi-Town who was signed to the almighty (at the time) Death Row Records. Every music fan worth his weight, knows Death Row Records ran the hiphop game from 92 thru 96. The flagship artists were definitely Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg and 2Pac. Slightly lesser known but still notorious were Daz and Kurupt (tha Dogg Pound), the Lady of Rage and Sam Sneed. Death Row also had a few R&B acts on the roster, most notably Jewell and Danny Boy.

His largest claim to fame had to have been his hook on the 2Pac smash I AINT MAD ATCHA, besides that one, many a R&B lover consider his Death Row soundtrack cuts classic too. Just a teenager at the time he was signed by Suge Knight, he finally released his 1st official solo single in 96.

So what does this have to do with Mr Thomas Crown?

SLIP N SLIDE, 1st single, was produced by Reggie Devell Moore, co-produced by Devante. Reggie Moore was a young producer working with Devante and the Bassment Crew in Rochester, NY back in the early to mid 90’s. And the credits on that single also feature Ginuwine on background vocals.

So DB’s debut is called IT'S ABOUT TIME, ALL tracks on it were recorded between 1994 and 1996. California legend DJ Quik produced 11 tracks on the album. One song was provided by Demetrius Shipp, ex-Troop member. Devante has 3 songs on the album. His songs, per Danny Boy’s admission were recorded during the same time as SLIP N SLIDE. Tracks are IF U DON'T MIND, JUST RIDE (ft JoJo of Jodeci – crazy vocoder on this one by De Swing) aaaannnnd the lead single off this project called IT'S ALL ABOUT U. It features Devante prominently on the talkbox, Ginuwine on background vocals, but as a diehard Timbo fan, the craziest thing is when about halfway thru the track you hear the lyrics…”Wait a minute, wont you hear me baby….” Sung in the same melody and cadence as a Timbaland produced track we heard back in 99 on Ginuwine’s 100% album….WAIT A MINUTE. That Timbaland track credits Ginuwine and Timbaland as writers.. Word is that Ginuwine co-wrote this song also.

Man, before I was a Timmy fan, I was a Devante fan so this song is a major find on its own, but with that added twist, a must have gem for anybody that's tryna have that complete Timbaland/Bassment collection.

Here is some Slip N Slide and IT'S ALL ABOUT U…

Finally, I have a physical copy of this album. Unfortunately, Wide Awake, the label that purchased distribution rights to Death Row’s catalog, slacked once again on the booklet, just like with last year's Death Row boxed sets with dozens of “Producer Unknown” credits. This time around all we get are the production credits on a one-sided sheet of paper. I need to know details, engineering, writing, mixing. The iTunes version of this album comes with a Digital Booklet, unfortunately I am currently in Japan and their iTunes store does not carry the album. If anyone purchased this cd thru iTunes and the credits are more detailed than just 'Produced by….', then hit us up.

Diddy Makes A Stop Before Paris

Diddy’s highly anticipated Last Train To Paris album is shaping up to be a major hit. Along with guests Chris Brown, Lil’ Wayne, Swizz Beats, T.I., God, and Rick Ross, Justin Timberlake will also be joining Puff on the album. The untitled track is produced by none other than Timbaland.

Danja and Timbaland reunited once again!

Timbaland To Be Honored

It was bound to happen sometime! Timbaland will be honored at this year’s VH1 Honors for his “ground breaking contributions to hip hop.” For the first time in it’s 7 year history, this year’s award show will honor a particular region, The Dirty South, with hilarious Craig Robinson from The Office (“you need to access your non crazy side”.)

Performers so far will be Bone Crusher, Bun B, Chamillionaire, Dem Franchize Boyz, DJ Drama, DJ Khaled, Flo Rida, Gucci Mane, Juvenile, Lil Jon, Missy Elliott, Murphy Lee, Mystikal, Nelly, Paul Wall, Pitbull, Plies, Rick Ross, Slim Thug, T-Pain, Trick Daddy, Trina and Ying Yang Twins.
Congratulations Timbaland!!

Danja Wins BIG!

A big Chronicles congratulations goes to Danja for his HUGE wins at this year’s SEASAC Awards. Danja was the night’s big winner picking up Songwriter of the Year and Song of the Year for Keri’s “Knock You Down.” Danjahandz Muzik also won Publisher of Year. Congrats to Danja, Marcella, and the whole crew!

Jim Beanz Let's Us Know

Here’s another great interview with Give It To Me! writer extraordinaire, Jim Beanz:

What have you learnt since being in the studio time Timbaland?
One thing he taught me is to always challenge yourself and always come different because the second people think that they know you and they get use to hearing certain sounds from you don’t grow past that. One thing about him is that he always reinvents himself, so the one thing that he’s taught me is that we do the same thing twice.

How did you first come into contact with Timbaland?
I started working with Tim about six or seven years ago. He heard of me through an Indian artist I had been working with and at the same time he had stopped working with his Indian artist so he somehow got a hold of a CD that I’d worked on with her and he ended up flying her to meet him. Something went down where she actually didn’t sign to Tim but they told him that he should meet up with me and hear some off my work. So he flew me down for the first project we worked on together which was with Nelly Furtado and it was a wrap. Ever since then I’ve been working with him.

Did you see yourself only relegated to the background work or were you looking to play a bigger role and try to step out on your own?
Well I came in the game with Tim as a vocal producer, he didn’t know I did anything else. So in general the way the world works, you can say that you’re a rapper or a singer, but you’re not really known as that until people gravitate towards you and they wanna see you rap or sing. So in my case I was brought into the scenario as a vocal producer first, so it was after they found out that I wrote and that’s when I started working Keri Hilson, Fantasia, Britney Spears they were like “Oh he’s a writer now”. And from that came the first song that I produced with Tim which was Jennifer Hudson’s Popular, which was supposed to be one of her singles, but the tragedy in her family happened right around the time it was meant to be launched as a single and it was the craziest time ever. But everything happens for a reason, that’s why the most recent production that everyone knows of mine is the Katy Perry’s If We Ever Meet Again

There’s a very interesting story to that first question that I’ve know about for a long time. All I can say is if it was meant to be it’s meant to be and Beanz deserves ALL of his success!

Will We Get Shock Value III?

Timbaland has reached a level where his name isn’t just a name it’s a brand. Over the last 3 years or so Timbo has gone from big to HUGE. I wonder if Tim ever thought that he would one day pack stadiums full of tens of thousands of people during that time when he was sleeping literally in Da Bassment.

Unfortunately though, name does not always translate to sales especially in the music industry these days. Though it’s had high expectations and has had a couple number #1 charted singles, Shock Value II has only sold 214,000 units after being on the charts for 22 weeks. Not the best numbers especially compared to Tim’s multi platinum last effort.

BUT if we go by what Timbo said earlier, we should be getting another album or maybe some hot ass remixes!

The Dream Pays Tribue To Aaliyah

Some things should be left alone forever; the original “We Are The World”, Michael Jackson rumors, Kid from Kid N Play’s hair, and so many more. As far as being untouched Timbaland songs, a track I think we can all agree on that should never be touched is Aaliyah’s “One In A Million.” The subtlety and sultriness of her voice will be forever unmatched but despite that, The Dream decided he wanted to do his best to cover it. Check it out:

Well it seemed Mr. Radio Killah got a lot of flack for his tribute and decided to give a response via his twitter:

"No one will ever [sing] Aaliyah's 'One In A Million' like she did! Deff not me lol. I did it because I Reilly miss her still and it was out of respect! To her I'm still just a fan not a writer not an artist a Fan! Calm down the worlds not over. But y'all will remember how dope she was and still is to this day!"

This definitely bring back memories of Kiley Dean’s “Make Me A Song” that many argue led to the shelving of her album. Not from the song itself but rather the lack of interest in her first single dooming anything else that came out after that.

What do you think, you feeling it?

Diplo Doesn't Care "If We Meet Again"

One of my favorite producers, Diplo, took to his twiiter to share his thoughts on the Kate Perry/Timbaland video for "If We Meet Again"

Diplo: this timbaland katy perry video is the biggest pile of shite iver ever seen

Diplo: timbaland and katy perry got chemistry like two rocks in the bottom of a mudpit

Diplo: my mgmt told me stop dissin pop star pon twitter cuz they wont want work with me-but fuck dem all cuz they suk my ballz id rather make metal

Guess it's not for everyone. Oh and if you haven't seen Major Lazer live yet....GO!!

Drake & Timbaland Drake Revealed

More details have come forward regarding one of the most anticipated albums of the year, Drake’s Thank Me Later and the include:

1. Timbaland produced a track called "Thank Me Now."
2. Indie pop band Francis and the Lights, who opened for Drake on tour, is featured on one song. "I wanted to take what I love about [their] music and bring it into my world," says Drake.
3. "Karaoke" deals with the pitfalls of achieving fame at an early age. He recalls how he felt at 15 when his girlfriend told him she couldn't love a star. "It killed me," he explains. "I can't wait till she hears it. She'll know it's her."
4. Jay-Z schools his younger peer on "Light Up."
5. Drake made this album for music lovers, not for the Billboard charts. "I didn't make this album for commercial purposes. A lot of the verses are extremely long. I just made it to share with people. I hope they can enjoy."

Let's hope it's as good as "Say Something"!

MTV Interviews Jim Beanz

Jim Beanz is blowin ’ up! I duck out for awhile and come back and the dude is HUGE! Beanz recently sat down with MTV UK and shared his thoughts on how he got started, working with Britney Spears, and going solo? Here are some highlights:

Why has Timbaland let other producers make his Shock Value 2 tracks?

Timbaland doesn't let other people make the tracks. Timbaland oversees everything, he will start the tracks off and other producers will come in and add instruments here or there, just like any other producer. A lot of people think that Timbaland lets other people make the music but that is not true, Timbaland oversees everything he does.

Is Timbo a fan of European sounding dance music?

He’s a fan of anything that is music, he is a genius. He always thinks outside the box, he has a way of taking sounds and making them work together.

How are the Rhianna sessions for the new album going?

They are going amazingly. Her new album is going to be crazy. It could be one of the best things I have ever worked on. I always try to out do myself every time, I never try to go backwards. I will say though the tracks I have worked on with Timbaland for Rhianna have been amazing, Timbaland has always been the one to re-invent himself and at the moment he is really on some fast-forward sh*t, he is really going to kill the game with the stuff he is working on now

Are you going to release solo material like Timbaland?

Only God knows what the future holds. Artist wise I never wanted to really be an artist, I do sing on a lot of things everything from Britney Spears songs to Nelly Furtado songs to Diddy material.

New Keri Album Later This Year?

That’s what’s being reported! Along with being the new face of Avon, Keri as we know has been working with Polow, Timbaland, and Ryan Leslie to name but a few and her album is supposeduly going to be here by the end of the year. So what can we expect, read for yourself:

"I have to speak for women. I really wanted to do an album that went more in that direction. I did it on a couple of occasions like 'Turning Me On', but this time, I'm really, really going there to show women to be confident. No matter what your circumstance you have to push through."

Let’s hope this time around her album doesn’t get pushed back 403049 times!
