Timbaland to quit music?

Timbaland has mentioned it in the past about how he's such a great producer that music can't handle him hence his break for a few years. Now he's back with similar thoughts on his greatness and music:

****Washington, July 1 (ANI): Music producer Timbaland has revealed that he's about to say goodbye to music because he's "too innovative for the music world."

The hip hop star claims that he has grown disenchanted with music and so is preparing for retirement as soon as he finds a suitable protege to pass his genius on to.

"I don't need to do anything for money. I'm just glad to have a job. But music is boring right now. I'm too innovative for the world," Contactmusic quoted him, as saying.

Timbaland added that though nobody would be able to match his stature, he would try to teach some of his sounds to up-and-coming producers.

"I've been doing it so long, I'm about to throw in the towel. I'm about to de-crown myself and pass it over to one of the up-and-coming producers under me. They won't be able to be me - there's only one Timbaland - but there's a certain sound that I try to teach," he added.****

Let me ask ya'll, how do you feel after reading Tim's comments? What do you think about Tim quitting music because "he's too innovative for the world"?

My opinion: Who is Timbaland to say something like that? I don't care how good you are, how good you think you are, or how good people make you out to be come humble and come with some respect for music in general. You may be the best but let's not rub it in everyone's faces. Tim has complained about how boring music is many times throughout his career but instead of continually changing it and letting his music speak for itself, he comes with these outlandish quotes of how "everyone" is biting his style or that he's somehow "too good" for music.

I also have to wonder how The Royal Court or Hannon Lane feels reading these articles were Tim goes on and on about how he's the best yet they are working just as hard as he is on creating innovative and fresh, new music. When I read quotes like this the Timbaland fan in me slowly dies away. It becomes to hard to separate the Timbaland the incredible producer of Aaliyah's "One In A Million" and Missy's "She's A Bitch" versus the Timbaland who's too good for the world to possibly handle.

I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of opinions on this subject, even within The Chronicles team, so please share them.

  1. i do believe he's too innovating for the mainstream hip hop world, especially the hip hop world today. but, outside of the hip hop world he is far from as innovating as he is making himself out to be, in no disrespect. esp when compared to guys like brian eno, norman smith, and even daft punk, etc. his "cocky" comment really doesn't bother me. i only care about the protege comment. gotta hit up thomas crown studios when he comes back in town.

  2. we should like his music, not himself, he's too selfish.

  4. all i gotta say is..

timbaland is good at making music that sounds good to him. now, i know that sounds really vague, but think about it.

when timbaland is in the studio and he makes something he's bobbin his head to, i mean, to him it's great. and when we hear it, sure it sounds good and we dig it. but do we ONLY enjoy music by timbaland? most likely not. do you think timbaland listens only to his music? most likely not.

for tim to say things like, he's the best and his musical genius is too ahead of our time, that's not really saying much. those words have no weight.

in his mind, his music is his best. but that's why we all have our own minds. we're all different. sure, tim can bring new elements of music to the table. but there's always someone out there who's being just as innovative and creative. that's why music is enjoyed by billions of people. everyone who enjoys and makes music is inspired by another fellow musician. for tim to fall back and say he's done is to say that he's no longer adding to music. music itself.

that might sound like a lot of rambling but whatever. that's just what i felt after reading this.

  8. pft, EVERYDAY someone comes up with new methods, rhythms, melodies, harmonies, samples, Instruments and whatnot!
I'd suggest Timbaland shopuld try to invent an Instrument himself or lern to play one that already exists!
I'd bet 20$ he'd change his mind concerning the Best-Topic.
Knowing how to play an instrument gives you a comletely diff. look on abilities!

He's good, but def. not THE Best.
I Like his beats the most(besides some others), but looking at Dilla, Madlib, Quincy Jones, Chad Hugo or even Mike Patton or Björk, sets Timbo soo much into middle of the BOX!
Just sampling new beat patterns or just being succesful with unusual sounds doesnt mean, that you're the best. There are thousands out there, that just didint get no attention yet.
Not cause there whack, but because the industry dont wanna go the vague experimental route.

  9. timbaland isn't the best anymore....he was the best...danja is a rare producer....he is bad...i miss the old timbaland...the man who produced for aaliyah, missy and ginuwine....

  10. They should have asked him about his most innovative songs. I wonder what he would have said. Ima say how it is: pickin drums, samples from a CD or literally stealin other peoples shit without givin them credit is not innovative enough to say u ahead of our time. I played more than 7 years very professional piano and strings and just judging on few videos how Tim sits in front of they keyboard and moves his fingers I can tell u he doesn't know how to play! if u hear some melodic Timbo shit, it was either a sample or he had someone like Scott Storch, Danja etc. coming up with the melody. So just cause u made it in this industry doesn't mean shit 2 me. U was there @ the right time, with the right team and the right sound. So just appreciate that and stay humble. Let the fans judge who is the most innovative hiphop/R&B producer (Pop/Rock-wise he defintely isn't), cause they buy ur shit and are part of making what u are today.

  11. whoa! a lot of people on here just damn slamming negatives. crazy.

Maybe he wants to concentrate more on his label like Dre does. Maybe he'll just take a break and then come out with a beat like he did for Game. Maybe, Maybe, Maybe.

Lets all just wait and see. Im fed up of dicks posting hateful shit. I agree with J, I am losing a little bit of respect for Tim when he makes comments like this, but lets just wait and see. Maybe he is just making us want and listen to his more..

  12. I KNEW THIS WAS GONNA HAPPEN,HE WAS TOO COCKY WITH SHOCK TREATMENT,AND IT DIDNT DO WHAT HE THOUGHT IT WAS GONNA DO,MUSIC CHANGES AND SO DO PEOPLES TASTE,JUST LIKE HIPHOP,AT ONE TIMERUN DMC WAS KINGS,UNTIL RAKIM CAME,THAT DIDNT MAKE RUN DMC WACK,THEY JUST WASNT READY FOR THE CHANGE....THIS SHOWS TIM HAS BECOME A VICTIM OF SOUNDSCAN,AND THE INDUSTRY HYPE OF YOUR A STAR PRODUCER..FOLLOW PRINCE LEAD,HE STILL MAKES MUSIC ,INNOVATIVE MUSIC BUT HE DOESNT RETIRE CUZ ITS NOT SELLIN MILLIONS,HEDOES IT CUZ HE IS A MUSICIAN ,A PRODUCER WHO LOVES HIS CRAFT..HE DOESNT BASE HIS MUSIC OFF CHARTS,AND SALES! THE THING I FOUND TIMBALAND NOT BE ABLE TO DO IS FIT IN! TIM CANT MAKE A TITANIC RECORDS CUZ THATS REGULAR REAL MUSIC,THATS HIS WEAKNESS...I COULD HAVE MADE A HIT,BANGING ON A TRASH CAN WITH JUSTIN TIMBLAKE SINGING ON IT...THIS IS NOT A BASH TIM COMMENT ITS A REALITY CHECK....TEDDY RILEY CHANGED RADIO,AND THE TEMPO OF MUSIC,BUT ONCE HIS TIME WAS UP HE FELL BACK WITHOUT COMPLAINTS,AND HE STILL IS A GENIUS....THE GOAL OF A ARTIST/WRITER IS TO CREATE THE A DIFINITIVE PIECE OF WORK,TIM HAS DONE THAT..EDDIE MURPHY SAID HE DOENST BASE HIS MOVIES OFF IF THE PEOPLE ACCEPTED IT OR NOT,MAYBE THEY WERE NOT READY FOR IT AT THAT TIME,HIS JOB IS TO CREATE IT DOCUMENT IT,BY RELEASING IT AND MOVE ON MAYBE 10 YEARS FROM NOW THAT PIECE OF WORK WILL GET ITS CREDIT,MAYBE NOT......THIS IS KURT KOBANE,IM JUST GIVING YALL A ESTABLISHED PRODUCER POINT OF VIEW,AND SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN KNOWING OF TIM,AND WATCHING HIS CAREER SINCE 93...CATCH ME AT MYSPACE.COM/KOBANE.

  15. son it's not mindless hating

fullest respect to what he achieved back in the day, but these days tim talks nonstop arrogant trash while hiding behind his secret sweatshop of ghostproducers

so how is he not a bitch? at least diddy admits it straight up

you seriously need to take a look at why you put this guy on a pedestal...

  16. outside the box, TO ME, also means outside of "watching soundcscan.
If your job sometimes is to jam along with your artists fine, but if they pay you to deliever a hitrecord that fits the radio, then you're not outside of the box!
...if you manage to just do what you want and everybody loves it, your lucky. Tim said this about his Collab with some artists(Aaliyah,Missy...).
all that having fun stuff and beeing succesfull.
he should return to that, even if all his solo efforts arent received as well as he hoped.
As long as someone doesnt play an instrument, I cant understadn why he would think of the whole music thing as beeing disenchanted.
I also dont understand why everyone needs to tell everybody that they're stoping, just leave it and everyone will know.
It reminds me of theatres and encore....

  17. you are so right....how can you innovate when you dont even make the tracks your on :P he should just take his millions chill out and call it a career...i lost all respect for this guy...really innovative showin up on a wrestiling show too promote a cd...he makes kanye seem normal ...this guy has lost his mind..

im not gonna lie the 1st time i heard that tim was going on a hiatus back in 01 i was sooooo hurt but then he ended up coming out with a cd and then i peeped his game tim likes attention if you have ever had the chance to meet him then you would understand what im trying to say i mean getting mad at tim and dropping him from your roster is like getting made at jay-z getting mad at lil wayne getting mad at every fucking cat in the industry that has come out they mouth and said some of the most stupid and arrogant things out there i.e. lil wayne the best rapper alive.....blah..
boogie i understand that you are upset being that you are a timbo head and you have put a lot of time and work into bringing fans together as well as jess and her sweet sexy and quiet sidekick mishan i see where its all coming from cause it has been times when even that sweet sexy quiet mishan has wanted to give it up and your entitled to it cause we are all human and boogs i will always have love and respect for all the work that you have done i appreciate it and if your pulling a timbaland then ill understand and still love you when you come back off of your hiatus because youre to innovative for blogging, blogging is boring right now you have been doing it for so long its time to throw in the towel pass that thomas crown chronicles blog crown over to some one else

  21. I think that Tim doesn't allow himself to REALLY enjoy the success he gets. YES he's innovative and YES he's a phenomenal producer BUT retiring is not an option at this point. The reason why we get fresh, new sounds is because he is at the forefront (with others)pushing the genre lines. We need people like that to keep up and coming producers as well as known producers on our toes. It's like picking a fruit before its ripe. It's hard to hear someone at his position say "retire" because a huge piece of hip-hop would die. Just imagine Dr. Dre saying he retires... HUGE LOSS! He is NOT going to retire... not anytime soon. A person like that with that much creativity doesn't retire. Just like Jay-z, the mental processes will continue to flow because ther is sooo much inspiration around you in this world. KEEP GOING TIM!!!

  22. why dont he grow and stop throwin a fit?

i thought that shit was about the music, not the recognition.

or maybe my ears are just behind now, and they arent advanced enough for his sound that happened 20 years ago.

yeah, its innovative to go backwards.

  23. First off, Tim has always been cocky. From the "Beep Beep Intro" on Welcome to Our World, to the whole "I ain't no pimip juice" statement on MTV, to when he called himself Rick Flair: "The best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be." I didn't have a problem with him being cocky when he was putting out hot innovative music, but that's not happening right now. Tim's music today is just watered down and cheap. I didn't lose respect for Tim when he made statements like the one in this article; I lost respect for him when he compromised his craft for mainstream recognition. Tim's been calling today's' music borning threatening to retire for a while now, and it's really getting old. Tim needs to stop worrying about what other people are making and focus more on his music.

  24. Publicity stunt, anyone?

  25. i feel he should pass the genius to me.

  26. How many times has Tim said the same shit now?! I dont put too much faith in these 'retirement' comments. I get the impression that Tim loves music, you can see tha in videos when he's in the studio. If you love makin music, you aint ever gon want to quit. I could see where someone says they wanna leave the industry to get back to a place where they enjoy makin music w/o havin the pressure of makin hits.
Far as his cockiness, everyone else has already stated how thats how he has been from day one. If anything most of us fans prolly just feed that ego.
Far as him bein the best? I think he's not the most innovative artist in music, but he is definitely one of the most innovative workin in R&B/hiphop. He takes sounds from other more progressive or alternative genres and inserts them into a genre that normally wouldnt think of combining those elements. His not being able to play is part of what made me a fan in the first place cause it gives you the feelin that if you can come up with some crazy ass concepts, you could conceivably do the same.
Finally, on his current sound? He aint sellin out as some have stated. The current 'sound' he's on happens to lean more to the 'pop' side than he has before and has achieved huge recognition and exposure from it. Tim goes thru phases, this phase might run a little longer cause of the success he's experiencing. I think his music today is just as crazy...it's just different. I cant wait to see where Mt Mosely takes it next.
