Timbaland & The Game Sued

It looks as though Timbaland's sampling woes have hit a snag again. Saregama, one of India's largest recording companies, is suing Timbaland, Danja, Universal, Aftermath, G-Unit, Czar Entertainment, Timbaland's Virginia Beach Music and The Game's Black Wall Street imprint for an undisclosed amount. The issue is over Lata Mangeshkar & Mohammad Rafi's "Bagon Mein Bhar" sample that was used by Tim and Danja for The Game's 4th single "Put You On The Game" from his album The Documentary. Saregama claims the song violated copyrights owned by the company, which owns 50% of all music ever recorded in India. Saregama should sound familiar as they also sued Dr Dre and DJ Quik over the sample used in the Truth Hurt's smash hit "Addictive".

How do you all feel about this? Do you feel that Timbaland is being unrightfully chosen, due to his fame or stature, as a producer that violates copywritten laws with his sampling? Or do you feel that if Timbaland isn't going to credit his samples then he is breaking copyright laws and can be sued? Let us know!

  1. he is a target cause he's a popular producer which means he needs to clear his music or do more research so he dont got to keep going though this shit

  5. So every time one samples and doesn't credit the sample they break copyright laws? Isn't sampling one of the foundations of hip hop that happens all the time with uncleared samples yet how many people ever get sued over it?

Is it right? no but it happens all the time.

  7. Man, these people that are being sampled need to stop being so greedy. We giving you life when we sample you "forgotten" goods. In some cases, people go back out and get a copy of the original joint when they hear it sampled. I listen to the originals of some of the stuff tim's sampled, same with just blaze and the boy Ye'.

Sampling is a part of this thing, and i believe that the one's who are being sampled should show a little more appreciation for their newfound relevance.

  8. I mean cmon. If anything Timbaland has opened my ears to this genre of music in general and im sure many others also. I wouldve never heard of these people if it werent for him. Sampling is a foundation of hip-hop and to be honest, Timbaland did nothing but make the original song hot. It seems to me he is being picked on...ever since that other sample from that video game. Cmon now. But hey, he shouldve credited it to avoid something like this. He shouldve seen it coming. Just my 2 cents.

  11. How can you even attempt to show appreciation for being plagiarized? The original artists want *immediate* recognition. They don't want people like Czar coming along and shedding the light on them a decade after.

I'm sorry, but whether it's a part of hip hop culture or not does not make it right to go stealing segments off other artists' songs (Songs they put considerable time and effort into coming up with), and not even show the decency of giving them credit for it.

Likewise, just because it "happens all the time" and most people are lucky enough not to land on the radar, does not mean we should settle for the image of being plagiarizing, rip-off artists, which is effectively what we're doing when we use that excuse. Of all the things in this world, I'm *pretty* sure the law does not give a crap about the ways of Hip Hop.

Hopefully this'll be yet another wakeup call for him. As much as I love how he samples songs in such a bloody unique way (I was blown away by the "We need a resolution" one), there are a COUNTLESS amount of potential lawsuits he could face, even after this one.

And let's not beat around the bush here: he's getting sued because he failed to give credit. Plain and simple eh?

  16. tim could sample with the best of them i think he will start to if it is true. He picks sample that most people have to research to find out what he used where as other producers you can clearly tell it's a sample.

  17. WTF.. thers load of remixes of this song anyway, why arnt they sueing them...

plus look how much of the track he sampled, just less then a second that repeats. Timbo wont get sued. cuz thers not a good enough case. the beat itself is totaly different.
