Portishead disses Timbaland?

Without question Portishead is my favorite band of all time, yes even more than Timbo, so you can imagine my excitement to see them on the cover of this month's Remix Magazine. Their new album Third definitely lived up to the 10 year hiatus so to go behind the boards to see how they created the album was definitely something to look forward to.

Much to my disappointment, however, Geoff Barrows the most vocal and most opinionated member of the group blasted American music including some choice words on Timbaland. Here is an exert:

"[America's music] is shit, isn't it?" he continues. "The hip-hop artists are just rubbish. Jay-Z's records always sound good, but he got the sack from Universal. If you end up with a country Britney, it doesn't matter 'cause they're all twats anyway. Timbaland came to England trying to find a Coldplay to produce. Everyone told him to fuck off. He went to America and got his own band and they are gi-normous, the most revolting people you have ever seen in your life. They are called Timbaland. We all like it underground but no one is buying. Even Moby is struggling."

"Mark Ronson's album is shit", Barrown exclaims referring to celebrated Amy Winehouse-associated producer's release Version. "He is a massive superstar in the UK. He considers himself as Quincy Jones. I'll tell you who else is really bad: DJ Spooky. He is so full of shit. At least Mark Ronson is talented. I saw DJ Spooky at the Knitting Factory, and I tried to buy a beer to throw at him. There are black people in England, so you don't have to come here and make out that there aren't any black people in England's art community. You have someone like Madlib who is a fucking genius-a genius! [He's] a real true artist in what he does, when he takes American TV soundtracks and turns them into hip-hop. Then Spooky turns up and plays a couple of shit European drum'n'bass records."

I take it no more Portishead samples for Timbo but hey everyone's got their own opinion. Timbo the King!

  1. He is a straight clown nobody cares what he thinks two grammy award nominated producers who have dominated the music scene for several years now.

  2. That Geoff Barrows is really hatin' on basically anyone who's doing it big, nothing to do with the music.

If Timbaland hadn't made it big the past 2 years, I bet he'd have a very different opinion of the music he's making. The guy's just bitter, depressed or somethin.

  7. Grammy winning?

haha Dude the Grammys are a JOKE!

I love TImbaland and his music..But when it comes to raw talent, Basement Jaxx/Daft Punk's production EATS Timbalands.

  9. Yo that Usher joint "Flash" is reported to be OLD from 2003, and is not even finished..... read it over at the Neptunes site......... As the moderator rightly said, Usher or sumbody seems bent on fcukin up the Tunes' reputation by leakin so much unfinished, scrapped material lol. Flash would make people think the Neptunes were on drugs or sum shit.

  10. Geoff Barrow is a cranky recluse so you shouldn't pay him too much attention.. Portishead have made some records that Timbo could only dream about creating though.

  12. i can compare Daftpunk and Timbaland because Daftpunk produces their own shit as well and the stuff they do, is outside the box..considering how Timbaland compares his stuff to being "outside the box". Borh camps are world known also. Daft being Euro and Tim being the states.

  13. Oh yeah... Portishead!! They're making hit records all the time... I hear them every time I turn on the radio... Not that the radio's any good these days, but this guy's an idiot. He's obviously a little salty that Tim is killing charts in every country that's important in the music industry... My favorite is when he says, "...Even Moby is struggling." Ha! That unmasks his lack of intelligence and knowledge for the industry in one sentence. Moby hasn't been successful for a while there slick. I understand where he's coming from though, because people like him make their "interesting" music, watch it fail miserably -- because although it appeals to them and their artsy cokehead pals, it's not for the general public -- and witness firsthand how it feels to be stepped on by a musical giant/genious such as Timbaland. Not to mention, he's still bitter about the sales of the s**t-for-music that he co-produced for Stephanie McKay in '05. However, I do agree with him about DJ Spooky... he's terrible. But for someone of Barrows' caliber to bash Timbaland is obscure. Shut up and do what is right for the future of music, QUIT!

  14. Uhh. Daft Punk are two people and Timbo is one person. Not to mention Daft Punk does a whole different genre and from what I know of them, they haven't as a group produced music for any other artist, only remixes and they are from a whole different country. But anyways the guy from Portishead can say whatever he wants it's his opinion, too bad nobody cares and his interview won't change shit. But damn @ Portishead being your favorite band, that sucks.

  15. ok then. what is the best basement jaxx track, and best daft punk track, and then best timbo track? who writes the best tunes, most original beats, and brings it most hard?

even if "flash" by usher is a "throw away track" or whatever from the neptunes. that shit is so raw. of course it sounds like the neptunes are on drugs. isnt that how its supposed to be? so ill!!!

  16. I thought the guy had a point behind his statements until I got to the sentence regarding Madlib. Then I just realised he's just a bitter backpacker. Its his job to dislike anything mainstream and criticise music that is 'ignorant'.. the irony kills me.

  17. Constructive criticism at its finest.

  18. Basement jaxx are certainly talented but they ABUSE samples more than timbaland, listen to 'broekn dreams' for example

same with daft punk 'harder better faster stronger' being the prime example

  20. tim is not a person that comes and goes,

he comes, goes, then comes back again :)

what other producer does that? neptunes came and gone, kanye seems like his a came and gone fella, scott storch and lil jon came and gone in world record time has the shortest spell of success. dr dre came and gone,(still awaiting him to come again)

  21. There's 10x more stupidity in these comments then anything in that interview *smh*

  22. He was extremely vulgar. i think he was attacking more the person, rather than the talent itself. I guess he would most rather remain underground and starve. I like portishead, but i think their credibility was flushed down the toilet becuase rather than being humble, and articulate...he kinda made us think twice about who we are really listening too. its unfortunate..
