Ever wonder how Danja and Marcella created the DJ Khaled banger "We Takin' Over"? Let them tell you in their own words:
Behind the scenes with Danja & Marcella Part 1
For a non producer like myself, I'm amazed! If only we could get a behind the scenes explanation like this for every Danja track! Big props to El Jefe on the find.

ReplyDeleteBut chya, this is the best post of 09 so far.
I could hear them talk about tracks all week... seriously...
By the time I get an opportunity to directly work wit Danja, he aint gonna have time for minute no name producers like meself...

ReplyDeletebad!
lets try and stay on topic pedro!
Cool video!! I have quite a bit in common with Danja when it comes to production. It's cool to see that he works how I work when I create my music.
ReplyDeleteWould be sweet if I could sit in studio and make some hits...tracks would be HOT!!!

It's sick when he gets Marcella to gradually introduce the different drum loops and kicks.
ReplyDeleteI wish they'd attached the microphone to his collar or something though lol.
Very inspiration..Thank you..

The whole concept of havin the drums before the instruments comes off as really strange to me...
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody else on here do that??? I usually base my drums on the feel of the music.
It depends on the mood I'm in. If I have a idea of the melody, the melody goes first.
ReplyDeleteBut drums coming first isn't strange, really. IT helps conjure the melody better. Brian Cox said he used that method majority of the time.
Actually yeah. Usually I'll put down a four bar drum loop and then my partner Jonny Fuzzion (FREE FUZZION!) comes up with a melody, which will either be a melody that plays through the majority of the song or comes in on the chorus. But then we just build the song from there, a lot like Danja describes. But thats not necessarily the only way we create. Inspiration can come from anything.
ReplyDelete"We are the music makers... we are the dreamers of dreams..."
Thanks for the video J! I myself start with the drums or a hook and build the song frm there. And yes like Danja, I've been using Vanguard all this while and its a nifty tool!
ReplyDeleteDamn producers in here... cat fight! lol
ReplyDeleteI just had the biggest nerd geek freak out watching that video. Glad nobody was here to see me. Though I'm sure they HEARD me when Marcella showed them drums off! SHIIIIITTTT!!
ReplyDeleteThat's why I love it here at the Chron, you never know what kind of surprises you might be in for.
THANKS - big time
Wow. This is truly amazing. Best post I've seen here in a long time.
ReplyDeleteYeah, whenever I make a beat, I almost *always* start it off with the drums. I think the drums are pivotal, they lay down the foundation of the music. Even if there's a strong melody in my head, I'll try to think of a solid beat that works first before creating it.
So awesome to hear this song broken down into layers. Brilliant.
Wondering if Danja is using the drum layerings for the tracks he produced...
ReplyDeleteI'm putting this video on my iPod! Nice, intriguing perspective; and that beat he introduced would have made a hot song all by itself.

ReplyDeleteOne little seed can grow a tree.
ReplyDeleteInstead of petty solo producer fightsm why don't we join forces and conquer everything to the far reaches of the music industry.
